Sand vs zeolite vs? for new sand filter.

Job done. Reused more of the old plumbing than planned as I bought DWV rated 90's instead of pressure rated...figured the nice curved ones would make for a better transition vs the pressure rated sharp 90s...then did my research when I got home...Oh well. Old filter was less than half full...

Sand vs zeolite vs? for new sand filter.

Thanks. Picked up sand this morning and going to give it a try. I think my main problem was that the old sand was worn out. Haven't got the old filter emptied yet so can't see if any laterals were broken.

Have all the parts to install a pump timer and hi/lo switching as well...hopefully get a round tuit after the filter replacement!

Sand vs zeolite vs? for new sand filter.

Well, the filter I ordered Sunday and expecting Friday showed up today...TUESDAY! Off tomorrow so I guess I shall be going out for some media! Local pool Store no longer stocks ZeoSand and only PFS at $14.99 /50 lb. OUCH! Menard's Home Improvement, which is closer than the Pool...

Sand vs zeolite vs? for new sand filter.

Well, in an aquarium application you want it absolutely as dust free as possible. I guess in a sand pool filter it should be fine to just dump it in and then backwash!

Sand vs zeolite vs? for new sand filter.

Nice to meet you too and thanks for the advice. I'm very familiar with good old pool filter sand; I've used it in several aquariums. I'd typically put a bag at a time in a wheelbarrow and and rinse it before use in a fish tank...would probably do the same before pool use. Was wondering...

Sand vs zeolite vs? for new sand filter.

I am replacing an old generation Hayward S-244T with the same model new gen filter. We've had the house/pool since 2014 , the past 2 years we've had a LOT of sand in the pool at startup. Last year we it cleared after a couple weeks but we figured a replacement filter was in order. This...

    New to pools and OVERWHELMED!

Welcome...I have had pools for 5-6 years and learned 99.9% of what I know right here on TFP. Order a high quality test kit, spend the money now to save a lot later.

Pros/Cons of Pool/Spa on same water system?

Good point there. Seeing where the upper return is, I'd have to run the water level 6" lower than spec or make my own drain standpipe out of PVC to make gravity draining to pool work. So...let's see if I can fix it!

Pros/Cons of Pool/Spa on same water system?

That's a fair comment. There would be no filling and draining...it would be plumbed to circulate with the pool water. Thinking along the lines of...a nice place to SIT in the water vs nowhere good to really sit in the pool. Uncovered it today and it's funky/green/nasty...so need to do...

Pros/Cons of Pool/Spa on same water system?

I inherited a 16x32 Vinyl In-ground pool and a 6x6' Morgan Spa with this house we purchased in 2014. Previous house had an 8K gallon AGP on BBB, so just had to ramp it up to an 20K IGP. Not really "spa people", we used the Spa once when we first moved in, left it running the winter of...

Hayward S244T Sand Filter-repair or replace?

Yep, I was thinking $100 repair, but seeing that the gauge failed and figuring I really need a new label, then adding shipping/taxes, gets it close to half the cost of a new one.

Do Hayward 1HP superpumps always run so LOUD

Loud is relative....how close to house, what things reflect/echo the sound, your definition of "loud" etc. Having said that...I have a 1HP Superpump that is ~ 10 years old. I had a pool at my previous house that had a 2HP Pump and then 1.5 HP 2 speed pump. I would not consider my current...

Hayward S244T Sand Filter-repair or replace?

I have a Hayward S244T sand filter that is at least 11 years old- it has the pre-2005 drain design. I do not have any records documenting its exact age. Problems: -Last year and this year, we had a lot of sand in the pool after opening. Last year we were able to vac it up and it did not...

Green tinge. Halp! I have numbers just new to this.

Good deal, it would have taken a few days to get it to you anyway. Another place you might check out is Great Escape near BV. When I lived on the W. side of Cleveland we had one in N. Olmsted within a 1/2 mile of the other 3. I found their prices consistently better overall. I just dont...

    Where did my CYA go?

Tonight PH 7.2 CYA 45 FC 6.5 added 1 gallon of 10% bleach, which should put me ~ 11 FC. Didnt do the math first, so not quite shock level, will add more in morning.

    Where did my CYA go?

So as of 10PM last night, ~48 hrs after adding the first of the CYA, my CYA 40, PH 7.2 (easily fixed) and FC at 5.5 (I added some Monday and Tues). Water is crystal clear...didn't realize how cloudy it was before! Added a gallon of 10% bleach to bump it up to shock level. Should be good...

    Where did my CYA go?

So 14 hours later... PH 7.5 FC <0.5, (but not zero) wasted a lot of $$ on adding chlorine during the daytime...hope it did SOME good! Added 2 gallons of 10% bleach. Put 4 lbs of CYA in a nylon stocking...filled stocking over the pool next to a return, all the dust went in the pool :)...

    Where did my CYA go?

That's one thing I do miss about my old cartridge filter. Pour it slowly down the skimmer and forget it. Probably get lost in never-never-land if I did that in a sand filter and then flushed out. I have plenty of nylons I can use - I use them for filters in my aquaria.
  28. K

    Where did my CYA go?

That would 'splain it. FC dropped a few times when we weren't paying attention, plus I was overconfident due to my previous experience and wasn't checking PH and CYA often enough. This pool gets full KS sun vs my previous one with partial Northern Ohio sun, so I figured the sun was just...

    Where did my CYA go?

Moved to Kansas last year and got my first in-ground pool. Once opened this Spring I did a full battery of tests and CYA was ~40. My previous experience is 3.5 years with an 8000 gallon vinyl AGP, using BBB method with occasional dichlor. Pool was generally stable once opened each...

White substance on hot tub flagstone overflow & waterline tile

I'm new to the forum but have experience with using muriatic acid to clean calcium deposits, sometimes called hard water stain. JasonLion's suggestion is exactly what I would recommend. The white spots are not harmful, just unsightly.
