No luck, still sucking in air. It’s not nearly as bad as it was before, with all the shaking and all, but it definitely only stays primed at max speed.

    Waterfall woes

Welp, after running for a few hours, there is definitely air getting in. Large air gap in the pump. Just swapped the lid for a new one (this is the second time I’ve changed the lid in two years).

Main pump is VS and I have been running it at 1100. It has three stages, so I’ll set the first to 3400 rpm, then the second to 1100. Thanks! I appreciate all the great advice.

    Waterfall woes

The main pump was the one shaking - it’s definitely not doing that nearly as bad as before, so that’s great. At low speeds, there is still an air gap in the SWG - how low is too low? Or maybe I should set the first step of the motor program to run at a higher speed? The waterfall pump kept the...

I left the check valve on the pressure side - is that what you mean?

    Waterfall woes

Okay, all replumbed. The main pump is not sucking in air nearly as bad as it was! It might still be sucking in some air, though; it’s hard to tell. The waterfall pump is still not priming - but in the morning we will see if it holds the water level it currently has (previously, it would both...

    Waterfall woes

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but a guy at Home Depot caught me getting a bunch of PVC stuff, and we got to talking and he highly recommended keeping the check valves in because my equipment is above the pool level. I know it’s just his opinion, but I wanted to double check - no check...

If I wanted to eventually put an ORP sensor in, would it be on the supply side? As in, should I plan a T?

    Waterfall woes

Okay, finally got back in town and revisiting this. Here are images of what I’m going to do - red is the skimmer line to the main pump and blue is the main drain to the waterfall pump. I’m crossing my fingers the incoming air from the skimmer line to the main pump is caused by one of the two...

    Waterfall woes

Nothing has changed yet - it is still how it was originally plumbed (I’m out of town, so I can’t work on it this weekend). The waterfall pump is still connected via check valve to the main drain. I imagine that the waterfall will ideally be plumbed direct to the main drain with no check valve...

Yes it is disconnected. I put together a manual valve and glued it all up to attach it all back together….and the “1-1/2”” pipe is not binding to my 1-1/2” coupler. I would bet they used DWV instead of Sch 40. It’s way too loose. I think we will just rip everything out and start over. What...

    Waterfall woes

Yet another thread hoping to resolve one of the so many issues my pool equipment has been having lately… Just to recap - the main pump motor went out and when I installed a new VS motor, air was constantly getting sucked in to the pump. Turns out my waterfall pump is tied to the main drain via...

    Trees near the pool

Yikes! Our elm has beetle borers, which is what the arborist was treating. We lost a giant limb and a few smaller ones. Fingers crossed all the effort saves it.

    Trees near the pool

Okay thanks, that is helpful. It’s surrounded by sprinklers and we try to be very careful about ensuring the right amount of water is in the soil. I have a chainsaw, just took out a hackberry and cut up a giant elm limb. It’s been worth the cost!!

They said the roots are aggressive and break concrete. It actually doesn’t produce much junk that ends up in the pool, another reason I like it!

    Trees near the pool

We had an arborist out to treat a tree in our backyard, and he mentioned that a different tree (an ash) was really a problem with pools. He’s trying to make a buck, I know, but I also saw similar concerns from some websites. It provides a good amount of late afternoon shade, right into our...

    Waterfall woes

It’s hard to tell - I could see where it could be a coating of dried glue that cracked. It’s the same color as the pipe so the camera light washes it out. One pool company told me that the motor I had (1.65HP) was too big for the 1.5” pipe size and I was seeing cavitation and not air leaks. I...
