Funny Leslie's Story - Read for chuckle

It's not worth another thread to Bash Leslie's, but recently I was in there getting some parts for my pool vac and the counter guy was trying to sell some poor woman a calcium additive. In our area the water is as hard as a brick from calcium and I wasn't going to stand for this. As soon as he...

    Yay, Foreclosure Pool!!!

I think you could start with between 5-10 gallons and let it cook. My good neighbor let her pool go while her husband was away and wound up with pea soup. It swallowed ten gallons on the first dose and asked for more! I think we used about 25 in all . . . Pete

    Yay, Foreclosure Pool!!!

I hope you got a refund or some sort of satisfaction from those idiots. Unless you're under drought restrictions on water use it might be cheaper and less efforts to empty it, clean the lining and do a refill. good luck! Pete

You project is proceeding very nicely. What kind of plaster are you going to use? We're going to refinish our pool next year and are agonizing over this decision. Thanks! Pete

    DE Filter Cleaning Tutorial

I have a Nautilus/Triton 48 filter and had been using DE since day 1. I tried cellulose and after several backwashes the the circulation wasn't adequate to power my suction vacuum. When I opened the filter after backwashing it was still full of very stinky/nasty stuff that had not escaped. I...

    New Skimdoctor installed

The idea makes sense, but I don't accept the claim about less chemicals and lower energy cost. My pump run time is not based on skimmer performance.

    Leslies Pool Store

Pool store employees are a source of misinformation about everything. I wouldn't expect them to know what day it is. I deal with Leslies and found that they don't even know where their store stock is located.

Solar Sun Rings - Savings or Myths??

My aunt lives in San Jose and has been using bubble wrap to cover (and warm) her pool quite effectively! It's real cheap, but looks like ****. However, she is swimming into late November, and was in the water this year back in late February. Not the same as those rings, but almost free.

    New build in South Texas

This is an amazing piece of work. It is so artful, yet it's not too formal and it looks like a place I wouldn't want to leave. Weather permitting - just live out there! How far south in TX are you? I'm in the greater Austin area and next year will be needing a competent company to re-plaster my...

Austech Leak Detection & Pool Repairs, Austin, TX

Thanks for this post. I am going to be getting new plaster next year and will be sure NOT to use these people. Are you going to get the location of the generator reworked on your own? This sounds like a serious error on their part.

    time for new plaster . . .

Our pool was lined with pale-grey "swirly-looking" Marcite 17 years ago and it's time for new lining. I was interested in Pebble-sheen, but the all the certified installers I've been talking to said that the product is too expensive and two of them have suggested the products from Wet Edge...

Why didn't I switch ages ago! Zodiac MX8 content

Not pleased with the MX8 This cleaner started out great and has now really become an unreliable nuisance. For starters, it usually got hung up on the drain cover, which is a Hayward that happens to be very low-profile. I have not spent the (absurd) $50 to add a circular "ramp" and removed the...

    Barracuda MX8 Review - 1 year later

My initial review of the MX8 was positive. After a year, given the available choices, I would buy another. One reason is that they neglect to include an important fitting to attach the suction line into the pool wall. I was determined that they had enough of my money for this expensive cleaner...

    Advice on pool cleaner

I'd go with a pressure-side unit. The pool designer was an idiot, but you're stuck. You certainly don't want to lose your skimmer . . . Just my .02. Pete

    Barracuda MX 8 review

followup on my MX 8 review I've had my MX 8 for over a year now and some of the halo has worn off. The fittings provided for attaching to the wall vacuum line are poorly designed. The diameter of the adapter is too large to fit my line - I believe it's 1.25". It is clearly sized for much...

Not a new pool owner, but stuck on this one

Maybe something like this will work as insurance : http://www.instructables.com/id/Skimmer-Leaf-Trap/ It seems like I’ve seen posts about similar solutions here, using a screen similar to what I used to call chicken wire. That is brilliant! I'm going to build one . . . Thanks! Pete

Not a new pool owner, but stuck on this one

Well, the thing with Texas weather is that it can just blow like hades and half the yard is in the pool! Sometimes there is nothing in either strainer and sometimes they're completely packed from a bad storm. Pete

    Shade Sails

This is a late reply, but I wanted to add my .02. We have a pergola, but the drought killed my vines, and then the PVC "criss-cross" got ripped up by some high winds. That's Texas for you! I decided to get a shade cloth cover and the first guy I contacted quoted my $1000 for a 6x12! I located a...

Not a new pool owner, but stuck on this one

I care for my own pool quite well, but am at a loss when we go away for vacation. Last year we paid someone to water some plants and empty the skimmer and pump strainers. On her last visit the morning we returned, she neglected to tighten the strainer cover. The pump lost prime, overheated and...

The Zodiac "Barracuda" MX8 Suction Side Cleaner

3 months later with the mx8 I've had my MX8 running all summer now and think it's a good vacuum. But I am not satisfied with the "plug" they provide to go into the pipe -in the pool wall. I mean the angled piece - which has a very inadequate design. It doesn't look like something that was meant...

    servicing my DE filter

I think I'm just going to have to wiggle it a bit and get it loose. It's never been taken apart, so that has to account for the "stuck" quality of it. I reviewed the pdf online under enlargement and it was legible. The magnet option is certainly attractive though so I'm going to try that first...

    servicing my DE filter

I didn't see any evidence of glue. I had backwashed it first and then used a garden hose to wash out DE that was pretty stuck toward the top of the vanes. So the assembly was free of DE. I know it's not a Pro-Grid, the housing says Nautilus FNS / Purex Triton. My owners manual has a Hayward...

    servicing my DE filter

I have a Hayward DE filter and due to my neglecting timely service needed to open it to break loose the DE clog. In the process I dropped a very nice Snap-On combination wrench into the filter and it slid all the way down to the bottom. Out of reach. I tried to disconnect the vane assembly from...

Had the same problem. The pump would overheat, lock up and trip the breakers. It finally burned up. Sounds like that motor is shot.

Probably need new pump. How hard is it to replace myself?

more than just removing and replacing parts I did a major pump overhaul on a Duraglas this last January. I'm fairly capable; can follow instructions and have the right tools. Regardless, after I had reassembled and though it was running smoothly and pumping just fine, there was a persistent...

    Success!

Yes, you DO know more than the pool store clerks! Last summer I neglected to buy unstabilized sanitizer and the result was a major overload of CYA that required a near-complete drain and refill. The drain % was calculated by the same store that sold me the trichlor pucks and was treated as...
