My new Black&Decker VSP and DIY pool controller

The code in github is up to date. I added a second transducer to monitor SWCG's supply current: Monitoring CircuPool RJ Plus SWCG.

If I did a plaster job, the result would probably look similar. But I had never done it before.

Conventional Wisdom re SWCG plumbing placement

It's a good point about CYA - the water leaving SWCG is probably much more aggressive (oxidizing) than what the target FC and the CYA level would suggest.

Conventional Wisdom re SWCG plumbing placement

What's the chlorine contents right after SWCG when the target is set to 7 or 8 ? Is it close to the target or rather much higher, something like 15?

    Replacing pump with Calimar VS

With a booster pump and Polaris cleaner there is no reason to run VSP at a higher speed during cleaning intervals. When selecting the minimum VSP speed just make sure that your SWCG's flow switch is satisfied and the skimmers are still effective in collecting debris from the pool surface.

Frozen Water in Vinyl Liner pool, worried with storm coming

A mesh cover may get destroyed by the weight of snow if the water level is too low. This is the reason why I don't lower the water in my pool below the returns; instead, I blow the returns out with an air blower and plug them. The minimum water level for my mesh cover is 18 inches below the...

    Snow Day!

Why don't you properly winterize your pool ???:D:p Ah, you think it can't be so bad as in this picture:

What's one thing about pool maintenance that most people don't realize, but really should?

Yeah, the subscription fees would be too much for me, and software should be free. I spend all my allowance on hardware.

Hayward Aqua trol RJ (by pass salt reading)?

I would look into confirming that your digital tester is correct. Get the Taylor's K-1766 drop test. It's currently available on Amazon at $31.

Swimming season is coming to an abrupt end this year

I ordered for my A&S pool several dozens of various sizes plugs on Amazon a couple of years ago. Didn't notice any quality problems. One of the two skimmers has a connection to the drain, so that one needs a combo of two plugs separated by a spacer; another spacer is between the upper plug and...

Mesh cover recommendations for inground pool 36x16 (DIY install)

We have a free-form RuggedMesh Meyco cover, bought in 2017 as a replacement for a 10-years old non-rugged mesh, also from Meyco. The RuggedMesh acts as a filter for dust/debris, which dries up on top of the cover and can be easily blown off. We open the pool to a much cleaner water than with a...

My new Black&Decker VSP and DIY pool controller

I think pumps like Calimar or B&D, controlled by a binary interface, are supported in Nixie. It should be doable with the REM module (Relay Equipment Manager). But let's ask @Katodude for a more authoritative info.

My new Black&Decker VSP and DIY pool controller

I will be happy to answer your questions. There were several reasons I did not decide to go with a full-blown, configurable soliution - nodejs-poolController or its offshoot nixie. First, my pool is very simple. Second, although node-red was new to me, I was in the programming business longer...

My new Black&Decker VSP and DIY pool controller

The range of the input voltage for SDR 120-24 is 100-240V. 240V could be too high, as the nominal 240V from the power grid could actually be 240V +/-10%.

My new Black&Decker VSP and DIY pool controller

The pool controller is powered from a separate 120V GFCI circuit breaker - Siemens' QPF2. In the US, the nominal voltage is 120 / 240V, that's why the power supply is marked as SDR 120-24 (120V input, 24 V output).

New to SWG. Installed a salt water generator yesterday and variable pump. Next steps

70 ppm of CYA is too much in your area at this time of the year. More appropriate would be around 40 ppm. Next year you can bump it up. Are you planning to winterize your pool soon? If so, you may consider postponing the SWCG startup until next spring.

    Pentair Intelliflo Pump

VFD is the box on top of the motor - it’s basically a high power electronic device generating variable frequency voltage for the motor. I think you cannot buy it as a part separate from the motor. Replacing the seal is normally a simple task, unless the pump is old and rusted.

    Pentair Intelliflo Pump

Three possibilities come to mind. The first is that the leak damaged the motor. The second, the seal replacement was not done correctly. The third, the VFD or the motor failed independently.

Do you target FC level at the start or the end of a peak season day?

From reading ChemGeek’s complex analysis of interactions between CYA and chlorine in the pool (I’m not a chemist) I have taken one important lesson: it’s safer for the swimmers and the pool to maintain a higher level of CYA. Measuring CYA is error prone - it’s hard to be certain if the true...

Filter - how long to run each day

There are no hard numbers, but running the pump and SWCG 24/7 has an advantage of chlorine being added to the pool in small quantities all the time, minimizing a possibility of dropping its level below a desired minimum. Also, verify that you really need to run your pump at 1800 rpm. It’s...

    Monitoring CircuPool RJ Plus SWCG

No, of course it won’t. It will do what it can- inform that there is no chlorine generation. Better than nothing :)

    Monitoring CircuPool RJ Plus SWCG

With the supply current monitoring described here you have a confirmation that RJ is working and generating chlorine. It'd be easy to add an email alarm when, for example, the current averaged over some predefined interval drops below some threshold value.

    Monitoring CircuPool RJ Plus SWCG

Doable, but with a big, big effort. I'm assuming that the RJ logic is programmed into a microcontroller inside the blue box. So the task would be to identify the microcontroller, buy its cross-development software, reverse-engineer the proprietary code and extend it to perform tasks that are on...

    Monitoring CircuPool RJ Plus SWCG

A slight deviation from the SWCG output setpoint is probably not critical. As far as polarity switching, as long as it happens at least once per day, it's probably also fine. I am a little puzzled why such a long duty cycle interval of 180 minutes has been selected by the maker, but I'm sure...

    Monitoring CircuPool RJ Plus SWCG

Node.js is a foundation of node-red, so yes... But I implemented the controller at the node-red abstraction level, i.e. flows. My pool is pretty simple and node-red allowed me to get a prototype running on my desk in no time: I got a great help from DIY Standalone Nixie Pool Controller...

    Monitoring CircuPool RJ Plus SWCG

Yeah, switching the polarity doesnt happen at the end or start of each cycle - it’s much more “chaotic” and rarer. If you observed a different behavior - are we dealing here with various versions of the firmware maybe???
