It was a combination of two things. Water flow/pressure and I had a nick in one of the joints where the spillover coping meets. Since it's nearly 5' it is made up of 3 pieces joined with grout. Once I got the filter clean and flow adjusted it would spillover about 1 out of every 3 times it...

FWIW, it's a preference thing. We have an attached spa and use in 3+ days a week. Certainly it's not as comfortable as most attached spa seats are not contoured, and spa jets are usually limited (up to 12). But we build ours with triple jet seats to get more of a standalone pressure experience...
