First Attempt

You are on the right track!

If you used powered CYA it will not show on the tests until about a week later...........Use the number you were aiming for when you use pool math.

I buy my test refills as needed. I keep the bigger refills in a cabinet and refill the little bottles in the box as needed. The tops come off with ease.

Okay. good posts and you are in good shape.

I suggest leaving pH alone. It will have a natural tendency to rise anyway so just leave it.

According to PoolMath, you put in enough CYA to get to 30 ppm (31, precisely, but of course we can only test accurately around + or - 10 ppm). Since it's dissolved, you can assume it is in there even though it may take a little while to show up on the test. CYA is easier to judge by precise dosing than testing.

Since your pool water chemistry is in pretty good shape, I think your primary goal right now would be to get the dirt out of the pool. Vacuum what you can but also don't be afraid to stir it up into the water flow and let your filter do it's work.

What was your starting psi on the pump? What is it now? I would run the pump 24/7 and vacuum and brush aggressively to get the dirt out of your pool.

Do you have a pic of that dirt?

Thanks again Dave and Kim for your advice.

I will post a photo of the dirt tomorrow (its close to 1am here now) along with tomorrow's readings.

Re your question on psi Dave, my usual reading is around 80 kPa (11.6 psi). I do have a slight concern about my filter as well - some of the dirt that I am vacuuming up is coming back in via the return jets. I have backwashed and rinsed regularly over the last week or so and the sightglass runs clear when I do, but I am wondering if the sand in the filter is up to the task. I did read here yesterday that with good use sand doesn't actually need to be replaced as often as people think, but I bought this house and pool 5 years ago and have no idea of the history before I bought it and I suspect the sand I have is very old. Since adding the sock to the skimmer box I do think that the majority of the dirt is getting caught and I just need to keep vacuuming until its gone, which is going to be my focus now.

A deep cleaning of the filter can help. When it's open, you can inspect the laterals, etc.

I would open up the filter and check for HOW MUCH sand is there. It should be about 2/3 full. Honestly sand NEVER needs to be changed but it does need to be deep cleaned from time to time and checked on at least biannually and yearly is a good idea.

A properly operating sand filter will let NO visible dirt back in the pool.......many people do not believe that but it is true.

This morning's results:

FC: 5-10 (way better than yesterday's 0)
pH: 7.2
TA: 80
CYA: approx. 10 (better than yesterday)
Salt: 4010

I call that progress. I know that the CYA number should go up over the next few days.
Should I try to push the salt up to around 4300 or leave it where it is? (SWG recommends 4000, TFP rec is 200-400 above that I am told)

Need to check the SWG today as it has a message saying "Check Cell" - might need a clean.
Also going to try to look inside the sand filter and see what's in there hopefully lots of sand and some not broken laterals !!!

Post a pic and your model with number and I am sure we can head you in the right direction.

If you want to take the sand out you can use a shop vac to help take it out. I put mine in my wheel barrow so it is higher up when I get to put it back in. When you go to put it back in make sure to cover the pipe hole VERY well (plastic cup taped on works), fill the filter halfway with water to buffer the fall of the sand.

Salt (SWG) in my weak area but here is what I have read-------make YOUR system happy. If it tells you add salt, add salt. The levels here on TFP are suggestions for the average pool. Follow what your SWG wants/needs.

Equipment details are in my sig - getting a photo right now - stay tuned

I'm not too fussed about salt. Historically I top up when the Add Salt light comes on, but I figure if I'm going to the trouble to measure everything else properly, I may as well look at salt too. For now I'm just using salt strips and I have no doubt the Taylors drop kit is much better, but the strips seem to be pretty good for now.

Well so it is! LOL not used to seeing someone adding nice details like that in their siggy! THANKS!

I tried to do a search for your manual but my laptop hates big files. I will try again in the morning when the desktop is on.

I will check in with you tomorrow. I am heading to bed now.

Kim (neat/funny to know you are just starting your day and I am ending mine)

You should follow what your SWG manufaturer suggest in how much salt to use. We offer guidelines here at TFP. If your light comes on, add salt or clean as directed.

Hi Kim, Thanks very much for that link, I'll have a play with that over the next couple of days and see how I go.

- - - Updated - - -

Thanks Casey - my SWG recommends 4000 and I've been told here to shoot for about 200-400 above that, so I'm going to leave it where it is for now and just keep an eye on the light - I have other more important measurements to worry about in the meantime !

You're going to love it!

In a sad and nerdy way - I'm strangely excited by this !!!!!

Thanks for the 10ml tip too Marian, with the o/s shipping I'm up for I need to be doubly cautious of my reagant usage.

In other encouraging news, my very fine layer of dust in the pool seems to be gradually getting caught by the filter. Stirred it up a lot on the weekend and now after 3 days its starting to look like it could be a clear pool again very soon.

For those following along, current (strip) test results:
FC: 5-10
TA: 80
pH: 7.2
CYA: 0-40

Good news is still plenty of Chlorine and I haven't added any for days, but we have some hot weather coming in the next few days so will test this daily.
Others seem stable, pH still down, but I'm not touching anything until I can get real measurements, this is just indicative checking for now, just want to make sure I have plenty of chlorine.
