Baqua out

Without CYA, you will have a real tough time keeping Free Chlorine up over the daylight hours. I'm surprised you have 2 ppm without adding during the day. The strategy during the work week is to test and bump 4 times: Once in the morning, once after work, once at sundown, then right before you go to sleep. That can be reduced to 3 times if you vacuum when you get home, but add chlorine immediately after you backwash and rinse. That way you don't lose any liquid chlorine by vacuuming to waste.

No. Do NOT add CYA. You want the level of hypochlorous acid to be high to destroy the Baquacil. CYA will make that much harder. Please stick to procedure as outlined in PoolSchool.

Don't add CYA until after you change the sand. Don't change the sand until you pass the OCLT, have a CC of .5ppm or less, and have clear water. You're not there yet, but it's coming along nicely.

ok...great....the people at Sam's club wonder what the heck we are doing with all the bleach....thanks again for all the help!!

Tell them you're cleaning up a crime scene and then become abruptly quiet and say nothing else...then they'll get really weirded out ;)

Joking of course....

ok, here is where I am now...late testing last night had it at FC10 added the recommended amount from pool math. Tested this morning and it was at FC 14, added what pool math said to. After work the FC2. is that normal for not much change over night, and then drop big time during the day? it was cool and rainy all day today...thanks
jim

Even cool/rainy you get UV rays on the pool. Right now you have no CYA in the water protecting the chlorine, so I would expect it to drop a lot during the day.

Are you saying you now have a 1ppm or less drop at night?

i need to do the test for what it is dropping at night, I am still adding chlorine so, I haven't done that test yet. I can do that tonight and see how it goes. The water is still cloudy, I think it is clearing up some, just not real quick.....

Chris, this is a Baqua conversion, not a standard SLAM

Jim, do the OCLT tonight. If you have 1ppm or less loss, now is the time to change the sand in your filter and add your CYA.

True, Tim.

I was just going off my own experience. Obviously, everyone's conversion is different, but my pool cleared up and passed the CC test in advance of passing the OCLT (yes IG with various fixtures vs. AG, but still...). I also didn't want any residual BQ to contaminate the new sand or add any more liquid chlorine than necessary due to higher CYA. I suppose there is little risk of that for Jim if he passes the OCLT.

Finally, I found it harder to go back to sleep after waking up before 5 am.

Sorry, Jim, I was just offering my $0.02, but I'm still learning too.

no worries, I appreciate all the comments and suggestions. so tonight I will do the OCLT and see where I land then if it is less than one ppm loss, change the sand and look up what I need to do to up the CYA. how high do I need to go with the CYA? that part has me really confused.....

Hi Jim, 30 to 50ppm CYA would be good, depending on how much sun you get. Here's the pool school cya info:
CYA can be raised with cyanuric acid. Cyanuric acid is sold under a variety of names, including Stabilizer, Conditioner, Instant Pool Water Conditioner, Stabilizer 100, Stabilizer & Conditioner, etc. Instant Pool Water Conditioner is a liquid product which is significantly more expensive than the other forms.

Solid cyanuric acid should be placed in a sock, and the sock put in the skimmer basket. After adding solid cyanuric acid you should leave the pump running for 24 hours and not backwash/clean the filter for a week. Solid cyanuric acid can take up to a week to fully register on the test, so it is best not to test the CYA level until one week after adding some.

If your baqua conversion is now at the point where it is transitioning to a SLAM, 30 is recommended so you dont use as much chlorine. Once completed you can raise to 40 or 50 if desired.
