CYA to FC Ratio Min vs Target

Hi folks! First time posting but I've been reading up a lot of info on this site and learning a lot.

My little SWG has some recommendations on FC and CYA.
FC 1 - 3
CYA 30 - 80

No way I can generate the recommended FC target of 6-11 with my little SWG if I hit the max CYA of 80
Im trying to maintain 60 CYA but even that target FC is 4-9. I'm currently as of this morning at FC 3.5 and CYA just shy of 60 which is close to the FC Minimum according to the CYA/FC Ratio.

My SWG runs for 10 hours a day along with my pump and generates 2.0ppm. Output is only 0.4lbs/day

  • Should I consider running my Pump/SWG longer to try and raise the FC Target of 4-9 (20 hours)
  • Consider replacing the SWG with a bigger more robust unit?
  • Leave CYA @ 60 and maintain Minimum FC @ 3 and let it ride?

Thank you for any advice you may have.

I have the Taylor TF-100 Kit, 10k Gallon AG SW Pool.

Brian,

Your pool uses about the same amount of FC each day, so all you need to do is raise your FC using Liquid Chlorine and then you just keep your cell running as is..

Cell's are pretty good at maintaining a chlorine level, but any big adjustments should be done with Liquid Chlorine.

I never recommend trying to keep your FC between the minimum and the target... While it will work, if things are always 'perfect'.. Most things are never perfect, because stuff happens..

I always recommend keeping your FC at or above your target level.. This allows you to screw up, or screw off, and still never get algae.. :)

Thanks,

Jim R.

Awesome thanks Jim!. Since my target is between 4 and 9 would you say anything in that range is ok with liquid chlorine? I checked the Pool Math App and assuming I'm understanding this correctly. A gallon of Liquid Chlorine typically contains 10% active chlorine so 1 gallon would raise my FC to 10.0 ppm. Does that sound about right? If I just pour half in I'd be a FC 8.5.

Shoot for the high side of target range for your CYA.
This will provide a buffer for when you forget to test/dose or life gets in the way.

Makes total sense to me!. I found some Chlorine at the store that has 7%. If I pour in a 1/2 gallon it'll bump my FC by 5.4 PPM for a total of 8.4 :)

Quick question: What happens if my CYA drops below 60. Not that I'd try and let that get below 60 but if it did, does that adversely affect anything or result in a FC that is way too high now?

You are safe to swim with FC anywhere between minimum and SLAM levels based on your CYA (as long as you can see the entire bottom of the pool).
SLAM level for CYA 60 is 24.
SLAM level for CYA 50 is 20.
FC being a little bit above the target range is no issue.
