Pool renovation

My wife and I decided that we love our pool area so much it was time for a refresh. Pool was built early to mid 1980's Timber construction was discovered upon concrete being removed. Wood is rotting in some areas and will need replacing, I have talked to a local pool place and they are slammed busy with about 10 other pools of our vintage to repair. He stated to me that the repair isn't too bad and if a person is relatively handy it can be done on our own. Looks like I may need to replace a few 4x4's and a bunch of 2x4's. Has anyone else taken on a DIY like this? How did it go? what do I need to be aware of?
