Air at start of pump

What steps should I take to understand what's going on. When I shut off the pump for the night, upon restarting it the next morning, a lot of air shoots out of the jets. It clears out in short order, but I've never seen this occurrence and I'm worried about a leak in the system. There is no visual leaking in the equipment area. The pump basket is generally clear (without air), but at low speeds, I have noticed there being air. There is also a gate valve and that does seem to always have air in it. I've attached a few pictures but they don't capture air/no air very well. The wetness is due to last night's rain.

You probably have a leak at a connection at the pad. Clean all the mating surfaces and lube the o rings / gaskets and road test that. (Filter and pump lids too)

*assuming no drips under pressure or psssssst sound when you shut the system off. Those would make it easier to locate.

Probably unrelated, but take a look at your check valve. The indicator shows the flow is traveling sideways. It should be coming from the heater and going out towards the SWG. While you're at it check the seal/gasket under that cover.

Question. I’ve noticed my connections were more difficult to tighten this year. Is there something acceptable to lubricate the threads on the connections to help with tightening? I had the most difficulty with the filter housing. I ended up spraying the threads with silicone spray. Wondering if that’s not a good thing to do..

You typically wouldn't use any type of lubricant on the threads. A silicone-based lubricant should be used on the o-rings/seals of unions and lids. You can sometimes move your pool equipment a little to make the threads line up more precisely.

I agree with above. Go through simple things like pump cover and drain plugs. You’d be surprised how a little extra lube takes care of that and nothing is actually “broken”.
