I need to make a main drain valve repair. Pool water level is 8” below skimmer a return. I have air in the main drain . Can I place a 5 gal bucket over the main drain to make the valve repair?

What do you mean you have "air in the main drain". ??

There may be some terminology mixup. Picture would help.
A skimmer is not a “return”, it’s where water gets sucked into the pump. Returns are the jets in the pool water where water is…returned to the pool.
The main drain is at the bottom of the pool under water. Would be pretty hard to place a bucket down there to do anything.
