I was releasing air to do normal maintenance and it just sort of fell off. I hardly touched it. Maybe this was 12 years in the making. Has anyone tried to get broken stems out somehow?

A nipple extractor should get it. HD/ harbor freight should have a couple styles.

Flat-blade screwdriver, strong knife, wedged into the plastic will remove it. If you heat the screwdriver it will go in farther and then just un-thread the piece.
