Late last season I was backflushing when suddenly the rate of flow slowed. It slowed to maybe 2/3 of normal flow. Fast forward to opening this season and I tried to figure it out. The lower rate of flow is consistent with all hi-flow valve postions. I checked the hi-flow valve, then the pump thinking the impeller might be partially clogged. Nothing. The impeller is tight. There's a small leak beneath the pump - just enough to keep the paving stone that it sits on damp. Not much but I will get a gasket set for everything inside the pump and replace. Something on the intake? I can't imagine a big leaf being pulled into the skimmer and down the intake piping or, if one was, I figure it would be decayed by now and there wouldn't be a blockage. Anyone experienced anything similar or have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

So the pump did not slow down, just the flow from it. Which implies it had either a restriction on the outlet, or it was cavitation from restriction suction which would be very noisy.

Look at items after the pump that may be causing restriction.

Which Hayward pump? A Super 2? Any water at the bottom of a pump makes the shaft seal the first thing that should be looked at. If you reach under the motor, right at the mounting plate, is it wet? That indicates the shaft seal is bad.
