Equipment layout?

Na,

??? is either your main drain or a vacuum port for cleaner..

Skimmer... looks correct..

But.. there is no way for us to know for sure which pipe is the skimmer and which is the main drain. Turn off the skimmer pipe and see if the skimmer stops working or not.

Return to Pool seems right to me..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks. I will check the skimmer pipe.

How does the main drain function? The only place for water to be drained is through the waste pipe attached to the cartridge filter? I don't believe I have a vacuum port for a cleaner.

The Main Drain is not really a drain, but just another way for water to be sent to your pump and filter. Think of the Main Drain as a "skimmer" at the bottom of your pool that sucks in pool water and hopefully dirt to go to the filter.

Do you see a "drain" cover in the bottom center of your deep end? That would be the main drain.

Na,

My pull it out of my rear guess is that most older pools do not have an operating main, and most pool owners never even notice..

These pools have the main drain plumbed into the bottom of the skimmer, and the device that makes the main drain work, is missing or broken.

As pointed out above, the main drain is a misnomer, but that is what they are called in pool speak...

Thanks,

Thanks, so with the way the valve is positioned now, water is moving fully through the skimmer and partially through main drain?

Na,

Yes... but we are assuming which pipe is the Skimmer and which pipe is the main drain.. You really need to make sure which is which..

Point the handle of the Intake valve right at what we think is the skimmer pipe.. This will shut off what we think is the main drain.. Make sure the water is still flowing through the pump. Then go to the skimmer look for water movement or remove the skimmer basket and feel for the suction.. If you have good suction, this would mean the pipe on the right is the Skimmer Line..

Then, point the handle of the Intake valve to the left, right at what we think is the Main Drain pipe.. This will shut off what we think is the Skimmer.. Make sure the water is still flowing through the pump. There is no place for you to test suction, but if the pump is still moving water, this would mean that the pipe on the left is most likely for your main drain.

In normal operation, I like the main drain set so that it is only open about 10% and most all of the water is coming from your skimmer.

Thanks,

Jim R.
