I did a full drain and replace of my water this winter and I was thinking about the solar cover. Has anyone thought about all the microplastics getting into the water and then the body? I may just stop using one altogether.
You don't ingest pool water so there is no need for concern IMO.
*edit* had time to go rabbit hole-ing and the thoughts above are pretty much what science is currently saying. There is no immediate harm from swimming because while microplastics can be absorbed through the skin, it's not the same as drinking the water. Plus, as much as we all joke the kids are fish, they spend 98% of their time out of the water.
It is thought that small amounts of pool water is ingested but that amount compared to the current general thought of microplastics in drinking water and food supplies is insignificant.
The only other way that these microplastics can enter the human body is via the skin. The term to search for here is “transdermal migration”. The skin is designed to keep stuff the body doesn’t want out and stuff it does want in, and it is very good at it. It turns out that only very small amounts of very small ions and water molecules will get through. The skin is so good at it that it has to actively transport things like calcium and sodium across the membrane. These microplastics are just way to big to cross the membrane and enter the body via the skin.
