Widowed, retired truck driver and thought I would enjoy a pool. Well, I might if I could figure out the system. They sold me the ionizer system and I have no clue how to get my pool chemistry right. I shouldn’t have to drive long distances to have the water tested, but… if I had it to do all over, I’d have gone a different route. It was a big expense, but I thought my daughter would enjoy it after I’m gone. She told me, “Don’t get a pool, Mom! They’re too much work and I want to go to the beach when I come visit!” I’d like to go too but I have goats, hogs, rabbits, dogs, a cat and a bird, so they need me to feed them regularly. Anyway, I could enjoy the pool and still be here for the critters. The water seems cloudy to me and just regular test strips say the PH and Alkalinity is too high. I have put in PH down, but it still tests high. Now it’s cloudy!

Good Day, Paula! Welcome to Trouble Free Pools.
The problem with that ionizer thing is its a waste of money. Pools that use them are usually indoor pools with high bather load. They also require basic sanitation, usually with chlorine.
Chlorine takes care of 99% of what your pool needs, so really the ionizer is superfluous. Most of us use either a fast daily dose of liquid chlorine, or a salt water device which makes our chlorine for us! Easy peasy.
This simple way to manage our water is based on home testing using a *proper* test kit. Then we can teach you what chemicals are needed (so few: liquid chlorine, muriatic acid usually, rarely something else).

Here are our basics- Pool Care Basics

I have a salt water system which I'd never be without, and a robot to vacuum and with my pool I usually spend no more than $150 a year on it (to include test kit refills) and it takes no more than 10 minutes a week to care for the pool. I've never once had algae in going on 13 years.
