The valve I open for my waste line has been broken since before we bought our house. Been opening it with a wrench whenever I needed it.

Is this something I can DIY and if so, how do I know what size valve to get?

Any 2-way diverter valve will work. Yes you can DIY.

Use a caliper, or eyeball it with a ruler to get the size. Or, look on the elbows and connectors, they typically list the size of the pipe. Looks like 1.5"

d,

I'd rate this as very easy. 1 or 2 out of 10. Looks like the piping is a little off square but shouldn't matter too much. Appears to be 1.5". I'd use one like this that has a union on both sides so you don't have to cut the pipe next time. Make sure you get a slip fitting on both ends not a threaded fitting. This helps to reduce the number of trips to the big box store!

Thank you. So I assume I need to cut the pipe at the bottom since it doesn’t have a union? I’ll have to watch some videos before I attempt this.

Post a picture of the entire pipe. Does it go into the ground?

To make the connection easier, because it is not a pressure line, you can use a compression coupler to connect the cut parts.

I prefer to cut and use a union connection on each end. I'm sure there are lots of good videos. Or you can use a compression fitting as @PoolStored shows. Use whichever you are more comfortable with.

Technically you should not need a valve on the waste line --------
Good point. Maybe they could just remove the valve and put a coupler in place? Or just leave it in the open position?

D, when do you open and close this valve? Was it installed because water leaks through during normal operation from the filter valve?

Looks like a 1-1/2 inch Hayward Trimline valve. Without seeing other markings on the valve it’s hard to know for sure the brand. It’s marked 1.5”.

I open it to waste. The equipment was installed by the home's previous owner so I don't know why it was installed.
