for the first time in 10 years, the water green - i don't mean nasty green, I mean the color when you first fill a pool from the city and you have to add bleach. it's also not as clear as it usually is (even with algae)
SO i did my test and ALL the numbers but TA are abysmal.
FC0
CH 450 (HOW? it's been 2 years)
CYA - filled up the test tube and could still see the dot
pH 8.2ish
TA 90
Salt 2600 s/b 3400

SO first thing I did was ask the pool app how much bleach to slam. got 10. I put in two full bottles of 128oz 12.5% and NOTHING. still registered zero. I then proceeded to add two more bottles.
I also put in CYA in a sock in the return. however, I can't test it too much because, thanks to a screw-up at the TFP store, my order didn't come. And on top of that, the guy running it actually Asked me if I had ordered this year.....i had gotten the email about the sale. I also had to change my cc bc it had expired. Anyway, I let that go bc I had to.....bc unpleasant thoughts were in my head....I digress.

I also did a search here about cold water and algae.

Pool experts - this is my plan. tell me if it is flawed: I also turned the pumps to run 24/7 but I haven't turned off the SWG yet.

1. test the CL and CYA tomorrow A.M.
2. Add more CL if I have to to get it to slam level.
3. Add the salt
4. vaccum again. it's SO dirty!

My CYA was so low I figured it didn't matter if I pumped it up some but am starting to wonder if I should pull it out bc that will make me go through more bleach.....what say y'all?

Do not add CYA until you see the pool can hold chlorine.

Add chlorine for 10 ppm and test your free chlorine after 30-minutes. You likely have ammonia in your water if you lost 80%+ of FC in 30 minutes

Read Ammonia - Further Reading

Once your pool can hold chlorine you need CYA 30 to protect the chlorine in the Texas sun.

Don’t add salt until the SLAM is complete. You will be vacuuming and cleaning the filter and losing water. No reason to lose the salt you would have added.

After adding 4 128 bottles of bleach, there is STILL no chlorine. I am starting to think that ny DPD powder is bad. There was verity little left from last season and it was hard. I tried to buy some yesterday but the Leslie’s near me didn’t have any. I will go this morning to get some from a different store.

yes, it was defintely the DPD power. Wow. that was a first. Never had that stuff go bad. So after 4 bottles of 128 oz 12.5% bleach, it registers as a 3! man, I have got my work cut out for me....SWG is off. Pumps running 24/7. Will test in a couple hours to see where we are slam-wise.
