Hi all,

currently in the process of competing a SLAM after having ongoing issues with chlorine levels being low for a very long time and having to manually dose with liquid chlorine. Water was very cloudy and walls and floor were quite slimy with no visible algae so I am certain i was dosing with just enough to not have a massive outbreak.

It’s a fibreglass pool with cartridge filter, 22300 litres and the salt water chlorinator is a low salt setup and has a max of 2700ppm. No trees etc and never had issues with phosphates.

My recent test results before slamming using a test kit from Clear Choice Labs.

FC 3.5 CYA 45 , PH 7.2, TA 75 , CH 250, salt 2000.

Just wondering how long it would take to see a drop in the OCLT numbers ? So far there was a big drop from the first night of 9ppm, with the following 2 nights dropping 4.5.

I’m following everything as described and I’m at home so testing and bringing back to SLAM level (rounded up to 20) often

The pool is looking crystal clear and the CC is measuring between 0.5 and 0 so just the OCLT I need to pass now

Welcome to TFP! Now that you seem to be using the SLAM Process guide, it's just a matter of details and time. As long as there is no hidden algae undiscovered (behind a light, under steps, etc), the chlorine coupled with manual brushing will eventually do the trick. The time it take to pass the Overnight Chlorine Loss Test can vary based on all of those factors. I will say that the more consistent you are with testing and maintaining the proper SLAM (FC) level, the better the outcome. Since your FC level should be 20, do your best to keep it there and you should do fine.

Welcome to the forum!

Keep going, and make sure to give the pool a good brush. Chlorine alone will not get rid of that slime. And check hidden spots, like behind the weir door, pool lights, ladders, etc.

There’s no good way to estimate the length of time it’ll take. Average seems to be a couple weeks if it’s bad. Could be less if it’s not too bad or more if it’s particularly bad or you don’t keep up with the chlorine.

For reference though, your CYA is 50ppm. It’s always rounded up to the nearest 10ppm.

Thank you for the responses. I will keep persevering with it. Smashing through a lot more chlorine than I thought I would be using!

If the water is clear and your CC is basically zero you won’t have long to go. Keep brushing and scrubbing any hidden nooks and cranny’s you can and it’ll go faster.

Thanks for the responses and the awesome website.

Passed the OCLT last night ! Took 8 nights all up. First 6 nights had drops of between 5-7 PPM each night and it was pretty disheartening but then on the 2nd last had a drop of only 2.5 and finally down to 1 with a CC of 0. Going an extra day of maintaining the slam level figured it wouldn’t hurt to make sure.

Ended up using about 44 litres of chlorine for a 22,300 litre pool all up. Now that I have a proper test kit and I am basically starting from scratch, I’m looking forward to being able to do everything myself with the help of this website.

Well done and great job!

I'm doing my first SLAM because of improper/no care over the winter. I just wanted to say thank you for this thread, because this is the first time I've seen someone post how many days this could take. I'm hoping that mine won't take long, because my water looks perfect, it's just chowing down on chlorine. There's something in there. Anyway, thanks again for all the great folks on this forum that help out!
