A decent replacement for a Pentair DYNII-NI-1-1/2 HP Dynamo Single Speed?

That pump should have lasted longer than that. There may be something else going on.

What actually failed in the pump and/or the symptoms?

That could be due to a bad start/run capacitor which can be replaced.

It could also be due to bad bearings. Have you noticed any water leaking under the pump? This is due to a bad seal which can also be repaired before it causing bearing damage.

Does the impeller spin easily by hand?

No leaking. I'm pretty sure it's the capacitor (or I was until I saw that the motor is one unit). I haven't dissected it - There;s a guy at the pool shop who will work on them (side hustle), but that won't be until Tuesday.

There are a two different ways to turn the impeller:

1) Remove the pump lid and basket and reach down into the impeller inlet and try to spin it there.

2) The other way is to remove the back end of the motor and spin the shaft there.

Also, if it has one, the capacitor is in the back end of the motor. You can remove the screws (turn breakers off first) and look there while you are trying to spin the motor shaft. Parts diagrams don't always show the capacitor because it is treated as part of the motor assembly.

I'm going to have to completely disassemble the pump.

New "inexpensive" Oswerpon 1.5 HP pump arrived today from Amazon. I had to fabricate the pump to filter hose as the Pentair SD 40 filter hose fittings didn't fit the Oswerpon pump. And the pump doesn't lock into the filter base like the Pentair pump did.

The Oswerpon pump was (with a coupon) cheaper than a replacement motor for the Pentair pump. That's 3 Pentair Dynamo 1.5 HP motors in 10 years.

Is the pump on a timer? If not, is it run daily? If not, you will continue to have issues with the motor bearings being damaged on an above -ground pool.

You mentioned that this failure occured after a storm. Did the same thing happen with the previous motors? Lightning strikes can cause voltage surges and if you don't have surge protection, it is possible that could affect the motor windings.

But you did say that the impeller spins freely, correct? That indicates that it is not a bearing problem and since that motor does not appear to have a capacitor (inductive start) then the only thing that could fail is the windings or the thermal limiter switch.

You've had the Oswerpon pump for a while. Do you still like it? I'm looking at their VS 1.5HP pump for our above ground pool but never heard of this brand before.
