Hi all pretty new to pool ownership but have been following threads on here to see if I can actually self manage will less pool shop input, (still waiting for my home tester to kick that off).

Having been to pull shop last few times and my CYA LEVELS seem pretty high. I think it started after shocking a green pool. cya levels after this were 90 and free chlorine ~16. The shop said it would burn out skins and to use chlorine out to get the Cl down. However, having Read the posting here, correct me if I'm wrong but if cya levels are this high, free chlorine needs to pretty high to get satisfactory active chlorine (HOCL)?
Anyhow, I didn't add the chlorine out yet as they suggested and thought I would check with u guys 1st for further advice. Now went back to shop to get some more readings which I have attached.
CYA 112 (not sure why it's increased, other than me adding a little water as the pool level dropped I haven't done anything else)
FCL 5.61
PH 7.6

not entirely sure what to do now😞. How can I get that cya level down, is my pool chlorine locked/ do I have to drain the pool some what or is there another way?
Cheers

Winner winner chicken dinner. The more CYA you have, the more FC you need to sanitize at the same level. All lines on this chart are equal.

You need a reliable CYA test to know how much you need to drain. It's the only way to reduce CYA quickly. Hang tight for the kit to come and keep the FC in range in the meantime so it doesn't go green.

Hey thanks for the reply and chart.
Will sit tight cheers for advise.

looks like my FCL is low looking at that chart though.
Just to check, is the liquid chlorine in the pic unstabilised, if so I will add that using the app calculator.
Thanks for the help

A better term would be 'StabiliZING' - which adds stabilizer, and 'stabiliZED' chlorine' which is shelf stable

Your picture appears to be 12.5% Liquid Chlorine (Sodium Hypochlorite...basically bleach), so yes, 'unstabilized' and 'non-stablizing' chlorine

'Stabilizing Chlorine' is is typically
Dichlor (Dichloro-s-triazinetrione) adds CYA almost 1-to-1 with free chlorine, can push down PH
TriChlor (trichloro-S-Trianzinetrione) adds roughly 1 part CYA to 2 parts FC, and can push your PH down

Dichlor and Trichlor often come as 'pucks' or 'tablets' as well as granules,

'Stabilized Chlorine' like Calcium-Hypochlorite has a good shelf life, but obviously adds Calcium, so this can be an issue if you already have high Calcium, and can lead to scaling issues. Cal-Hypo usually comes as granules, although I have seen it here as 'non-stabilized tablets', which is a little misleading as it IS fairly stable, but doesn't add stabilizer (CYA).

Note that your jugs of liquid chlorine have a Best Before date. The label below says the 340th day in 2023. About a month ago.

We don't know when it was bottled and liquid chlorine begins degrading as soon as it is bottled.

Don't store too much for too long or it may not be as potent as you expected and give you the chlorine you expected.

And don't store it outside in direct sunlight...
