Hello all!

TFP has really saved me over the past few months. I recently bought a house with a pool and was testing religiously and was still having trouble keeping everything clear.

I found this site, bought a FAS-DPD test kit, (already had a Taylor kit before) and performed my first SLAM. After that my pool has looked better than it has since I bought this house 3 months ago.

Now that I have the pool in a good spot; I have switched to liquid chlorine. I did this to prevent any CYA issues.

I am coming here to see what you guys think is the best CYA test kit? I used the stuff that came with my Taylor Kit, but I don’t like using the 9ml side and trying to read the dot. That prompted me to buy a test kit from Blue Devil. (Pic below)

I have used both but I still don’t feel confident with the readings as I did the Taylor one two days ago and it was around 60 and the blue devil one today was around 40, which seems drastically different.

What are your experience with CYA testing and what would recommend?

Thanks,
Brett

Brett,

I have the Pentair version of the Blue devil sliding dot test.. I like it better than the fixed dot. But...

But, none of them provide a perfect exact number every time.

What I like about the sliding dot, is that you can quickly repeat the test several times using the same sample.. It just works better for me..

I run the test about 5 times in row and then take what I see as the most constant result.

To be honest, what I'm looking for is a somewhat repeatable result.. If I 'see' a CYA of 60, it could really be 50 or 70, but I can be pretty sure it is between 50 and 70 and that is close enough for me.

Thanks,

Jim R.

The tests all have a tolerance of at least +\- 10ppm so both 40 and 60 are in that range. Just pick one and be consistent with it.
