I have a vinyl above ground pool with 8500 gallons of water. I recently converted to a salt water generator and have been battling with the water chemistry.

I have been using a ColorQ test kit to get the chemistry in line and a digital saline meter but am now really confused! After reading the recommendations on test kits, I purchased a new TF-Pro Salt kit and received it today. I went through testing and do not understand. My saline meter tells me I have a salt content of 4100 ppm. However, the TF-Pro salt test shows me I have 2800 ppm, even after running the test 3 times to make sure! I also used some new test strips for salt, and they show content around 4000 ppm. I was getting ready to drain some more water to get the count to my target of 3500 ppm, but now I do not know if I should! That is problem 1!

I also have conflicting results in my ALK and CH readings. ALK shows a reading of 80 with the TF-Pro and 118 with the ColorQ. My CH shows a reading of 187 with the ColorQ and 400 with the TF-Pro. I know CH is not a really big deal with a vinyl pool, but there is quite a difference between test kits. ALK is in range with the TF-Pro, but high with the ColorQ. Just for background, The ColorQ test kit has brand new reagents and new batteries in the device.

To add to my confusion, my CYA readings have been above 100 all along. I have drained 60% of my pool and refilled with fresh water and have not been able to get it lower. On top of that, I have also applied 4 treatments of Bio-Active Cyanuric Acid Reducer. Each treatment is supposed to be for 25000-gallon pools! My tap water shows a CYA value of 7 with the ColorQ test kit. I realize I need to get CYA under control to get the chlorine in line, but I do not know what to do next! My pool water is crystal clear.

We are in an exceptional drought in southern Texas and draining the water is a last resort!! What's next?

Trust the TF-pro drop test. VERY accurate. Ignore the colorQ and test strips.

Trust the TF-pro. Drop tests are the gold standard and very accurate. Your TA is 80, and your CH is 400.

What is your CYA with the TF-pro?

Follow these instructions. Do it outside, sun at your back, hold it waste high and glance for the dot. Fill to each line and glance.

I can't tell you the number of pool owners we've helped here with haywire results with colorQ, strip and pool store testing. I've NEVER NOT been able to help straighten out a pool with a Taylor or TF kit. Trust it and only it.

About the tf salt test - be sure that you use a 10ml sample to do the test.

If your cya tested higher than 90 on the tf test you need to do the diluted test.
Step 8👇

I wouldn't count on on the colorQ if it's telling you the tap water is 7ppm CYA. I've been a tftestkits.net customer for the longest time and will always put those results in front of any othere test test results.

I completed the diluted CYA test, and the results show 140 ppm for CYA. This pool was running with an auto chlorinator since 2021 using the 3" chlorine tabs. I recently converted it to use a SWG in the last couple months, mostly due to the rising costs of chlorine. I understand there will be residual CYA from the 2 years of tabs, but I have already drained 60% of the pool and refilled trying to get CYA under control.

I also repeated the salt test and TF-Pro shows the level at 2800 ppm while my digital salinity meter still shows the level at 4100 ppm.

Meters need to be calibrated regularly.
They can also be up to 500 ppm off +/-
Trust your testing.
You said your water is clear. Have you done an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test?
With that cya level your fc should never go below 10.5 ppm at any time & ideally it should be around 16
If you have a problem your slam level is 54ppm. This is highly impractical.
.... "Min FC" is 7.5% of the CYA level
.... "Target FC" is 11.5% of the CYA level
.... "Shock FC" is 40% of the CYA level
This makes it very hard to sustain & manage ph as the ph test is invalid at fc levels above 10ppm.
You need to replace 50% of your water. That is only around 4k gallons.
Is this a permanent above ground pool or a temporary intex style pool?
