I have salt water chlorine generator pool. However, last year, I had pool service, which asked me to replace something in it for around $500 or change to chlorine based pool. I am new owner of the pool, so I asked the difference. The pool service guy said no difference except chlorine based pool is light chlorine compared to salt water generated chlorine and anyway in winter it is unable to generate enough chlorine, so they treat the pool as regular chlorine pool.
So, I changed to fully chlorine based pool. Is it good or bad? What the reason?
Any help appreciated.

The Trouble Free Pool Care (TFPC) system doesn't integrate particularly well with many, perhaps most, pool services.

Read through the nine linked articles available on this page to get a sense of TFPC: Pool Care Basics

You'll come across a description of suitable sources of chlorine. Both swimming pool chlorinating liquid and the use of a saltwater chlorine generator (SWCG) are suitable sources of chlorine and there is no difference in strength related to the chlorine provided.

SWCGs have a replaceable cell. These wear out after a number of years, often around five years. Replacement cells cost several hundred dollars. It's like paying for your chlorine up front. This is a possibility around the expenditure the pool man described.

There is no such thing as "light" chlorine... :scratch:

If I built 100 more pools they would all be Saltwater Pools.. :mrgreen:

I assume you are still using a pool service. If so, the key is how are they adding chlorine to your pool now? Are they using chlorine tablets or are they using Liquid Chlorine?

The SWCG is just another way to add chlorine to your pool. It basically just uses the slightly salty pool water to make chlorine.

For those of us who prefer to take care of our own pools, having a SWCG means that we do not have to buy chlorine for most of the year as the SWCG just makes it for us.
