I have an Intex Krystal sand filter. When I backwash I have to go between backwashing and rinsing 3 times, several minutes each. And it still sometimes shoots dirty water back into my pool.
But what’s more concerning is each time I turn the pump off and back on it shoots dirty water into the pool for about 5 seconds, even if it was cleaned 15 minutes before.
I changed the sand a week ago.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this? I’m losing so much water backwashing 5-10 minutes everyday.

You should backwash until the water in the sight glass is clear then rinse until theres no sand in the sight glass.
You shouldn’t need to backwash every day - are you having an algae problem?

The water in the sight glass always turns clear almost immediately, and I never see any sand.

I am having an algae problem and am currently doing a SLAM. But this has been an issue with the pump since we bought it.

When you replaced the sand did you inspect the laterals & stand pipe? Cracks in those are often the cause of what you’re describing.
Just to be sure, you’re turning the pump off before moving the MPV to a new position right?

Try to wait to backwash until pressure rises 25% over clean pressure (not sure if your gauge has numbers).
Another indicator is when flow starts to slow down. Sand filters better when it’s a little dirty.

I took them out and cleaned them and didn’t notice any cracks….but I wasn’t looking

I am turning the pump off between turns. Stupid question, I do keep the waste cap off during rinse, same as backwash, correct?

I will wait longer to backwash. I guess if it’s sending dirty water into the pool it can just clean it again!!

Thank you for the tips!

May want to check again & be sure its all put back together properly & carefully. You can cause cracks by dumping the sand in. You should add water before adding in the sand carefully.
You can use a shopvac to get the sand out.

Correct 👍🏻 you can leave the cap off all the time if you want. No water should come out unless it’s set to backwash/rinse/waste.

Let us know how it goes!
