Panicked Pool Fill!

Hello Everyone,

Long story short.

Just had the pool plastered and filled yesterday afternoon. While waiting for the water truck to come fill the pool. The plaster company wanted to start filling the pool, they asked my wife to start with the garden hose. Our house in Northern CA. Has hard water that is why our well is on a water softener. Filled for about an hour before the water truck came. After all said and done there is a distinct discoloration of where the well water was vs the rest of the pool filled by the water truck.

We have not even started brushing or running the equipment yet, that starts this afternoon. Should we be concerned? Is this an easy fix?

Thanks!

Welcome to TFP.

Easy fix, no.

Maybe an acid wash will even out the color at the expense of etching your new plaster and reducing its life.

Let's see what @onBalance suggests.

An unfortunate situation.
You should wait a few weeks before making any attempt to remedy. You should insist that the builder take responsibility for this. My guess, is that the pool will need to be drained and either sanding (power sander) or a light acid wash may restore the color. The builder may try to pour acid into a PVC tube device as a test to see if that corrects the discoloration. I am hoping that the white discoloration is scale and can be removed easily.

You might be able to lower the pH enough to clear the stain or maybe Jack's #2 copper and scale stuff (sulfamic acid) might work.

Give it a week or two with lots of brushing to see if it clears on its own.

What equipment do you have?

Thank you all for the quick responses. In regards to the equipment that we have I am new to the pool world so we have Pentair equipment, Polaris 280, Cartridge system.. it’s not a salt pool…

I will keep everyone updated, we are bummed because after we told the plaster company that our well was hard water they insisted that we start filling anyways.

Thanks! Chris

Was that hose water directly from the well, ie, raw water, or was it from the softener?

Do you have a water report for the well water chemistry?

Is the softener for minerals, ie, calcium and magnesium, or is it for iron, or both?

A few days ago our plaster contractor tried to start filling the pool with our hose (we have hard water also), and I told him absolutely not. I told him we had water trucks coming the next day. He was concerned, but vacuumed out the very small amount he had started putting in. This was a lack of communication between the PB and their plaster contractor. Glad I was there to stop it. Hopefully you can get your situation resolved quickly.
