I have all Jandy equipment.
I was told I dont have to get a Jandy HP, I can use whatever, but it wont work with the automation (but will turn it off and on).
can someone explain that to me a bit please?

For example, if I got a Raypak, what CAN'T I do with it, compared to the jandy versatemp?
Will it run when it hits a specific temp, or can I only MANUALLY turn it on and off from within Jandy app?

Lardo,

Almost all heaters and heat pumps have the ability to be controlled by an external input. Basically, the heater has a 24 Volt AC output that gets connected to your automation, this 24 VAC, then passes through a relay and is sent back to the heater tell it to turn on. The automation controls this on/off voltage based upon the water temp. So, if the water is below the set point, then the relay will close telling the heater to make heat. When the water temp hits the set point, the automation opens the relay and this tells the heater to no longer make heat.

Different units works slightly different, but this is the basic way they work. This means the the heater is set so that it is always on and set to the max temp, usually 104 degrees. This is not an issue as the heater will not actually run unless the automation tells it to run by closing the relay.

Some automation systems use a two-wire connection and others use a three-wire connection.

I suggest you check out your heat pump's manual under external control.

Thanks,

Jim R.

ajw22, so i am reading this as if I get a different brand other than Jandy, the automation can only control heat or cool, NOT both.
that would mean I for sure need the jandy then as I want to control both.

You have to see what the other heat pumps you are considering say. Some are more compatible then others.

Have you looked at Aquacal Heat pumps?
