Unknown spots

Welcome to TFP! Can you tell a little bit more such as:
- How old is your pool?
- How long have the stains been there?
- How do you chlorinate?
- Which stain ID kit did you use?
- How are you testing your water? Can you post a full set of results.

I just recently moved into the home but the pool is an exposed aggregate pool that was resurfaced maybe 4 years ago. I chlorinate with tablets. The stain kit was from a local pool supply company which also does the water test.

In that case we have a bit of a mystery for sure with many details simply unknown. It's possible the stains are a defect from the resurfacing process itself, or a chemical poured by the previous owners that sank/settled into the surface. Those stains could also be from something that seeped "up" into the new plaster when it was applied.

At this point all you can do it try and do some testing on your own and most certainly test your own water with a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C test kit. Here at TFP we never rely on outside sources to test our pools because many times those "free tests" are incredibly wrong ad their advice not much better.

For now, as a test, if you have a chlorine tablet or some cal-hypo powder, you might test a stained area with each of those. Rub a tablet around a small area to see if it helps. Don't let it sit in one spot though. Sprinkle some cal-hypo granules on a stain as a test as well. Both of those will test to see if it's an organic stain. The stains don't look like a typical metals stain (iron or copper), so I don't think it's worth trying those.

I was also told to leave a chlorine tablet on a spot. Which I did this morning before I left for work.
Yes, but don't leave it there. Tabs are very acidic. You may have a permanent bleached spot there when you get back. That's why I mentioned above to not leave it in one spot. If you are not home, maybe call and have someone remove it now.

Well, normally I might rush to say organic, but the shape of those stains seems odd. It's difficult to know if chlorine form the tab is what removed the stain, or acid from simply eating away some surface material. Almost like a mini acid wash.

At this point my best recommendation would be to get yourself a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C test kit. IMO the TF-100 kits are a batter value (link in my signature) but feel free to shop on your own. But you really need to have accurate test results at this point. No guesswork. The free local testing is very unreliable. A full set of accurate test results might tell us more about those stains.
