Green swamp at opening

My multiport is on the side of the pump, so if I understand correctly, I turn off the pump, turn the multi port to either recirculate or closed to isolate the filter from the other plumbing?? Then, proceed with the deep clean and finish with a backwash and rinse?
To my understanding, but disclaimer that I'm fluent in cartridge, while sand is a second language for me. Hang tight for Pat to confirm.

No rush, it will be later today befo my husband can help me with this.
So the last few recommendations:
1) Are you scrubbing, at least daily, all surfaces?
2) Did you backwash? (and note if gauge goes to 0 and clean pressure at 80% speed?)
3) Did you try adding DE (which may help filtering)? Add DE to a Sand Filter
sorry I missed this
1. yes, at least 2 times or more
2. not yet. My last backwash I noted that the gauge did go to zero and my clean pressure at 80% speed is 20 psi and it has not increased nor has the pressure from the returns, at least not noticeably
3. I have not done that yet but after take a look at the filter this afternoon I may order some if I don’t have improvement very soon.

Something else to watch for during the deep clean. Sand doesn't just go bad. It will last thousands of years as long as no one previously (i.e. previous owners or pool techs) didn't add a non-recommended pool store product to the water (the sand) without your knowledge. So besides looking for obvious junk in the filter from years of service, take note of the condition of the sand. The sand should still feel gritty and very much as you would expect sand to look & feel. It should not appear sticky or clumped together in such a way that doesn't look or feel normal. If it is, someone back in the day may have gummed it up and for whatever reason it's effecting you more this year. If that is the case, you may need to get fresh sand, but let's wait to see what you find out.

Last thing .... take your time with the hose in the filter. Many people have made the mistake of jamming the garden hose down & in so hard they compromised a lateral. :hammer: Slow & easy wins this race. Good luck!

I’m nervous. Mine has a lot more components on the inside. I removed them but what about the pipe that’s in the middle? Do I need to drain the water and cover that or will it be fine with everything flowing over it Or this skinny tube?

Also, when I am done, Do I open the drain to let the water back down to the level it was at when I opened it before putting it back together?

You have pipes in the middle as opposed to a single center standpipe since you have a side mounted MPV. No problem. Just place the hose carefully inside and go around it towards the bottom. You will have the MPV closed or in recirculate, so water should come up and debris should float up & out of the top.

I don't think it really matters. Water should equalize as designed one way or the other once you get it all back together and run the system.

I just finished and the multiport is set to “closed” but water is going somewhere. The filter water dropped a little and I can hear water trickling in the pipes?? I did tie a coffee filter around the top of the standpipe just in case. I’m going to get my husband to put this back together as soon as he gets a chance, and then I will do a good backwash and rinse and see where we are. Not sure how to judge the condition of the sand other than ever is definitely good enough to keep I think. It was just lots of tiny particles and pool brush bristles.

OK my husband was putting it back together and that little bitty tube that is sticking up has a little screen cap on it. It popped off and went down into the standpipe… 😤 he is going to get a magnet to try and get it.

He can’t find. I swear….I guess we will put it together and backwash and hope it comes out…
Oops. :hammer: That screen is to keep sand out of the air relief. You can always get a replacement later if you can't find it.

Luckily it came out of the backwash pipe during that process! He is putting it back on now and then will get the filter going. The pool looks dirtier after I did the deep clean and I noticed brown water was coming out of the skimmer boxes… how is that even possible when nothing had been turned back on, and the multiport was in the closed position?

Can you take the cover off the skimmer and take a picture of the inside of the skimmer pot?

It was just really dirty looking just like what was coming out in the photo. It’s already cleared up now. I backwashed, rinsed and the filter is back on. FYI after the deep cleaning and backwash, once the filter got down to its normal, running speed, 80%, the psi is 19.5. It was consistently 20 after I backwash before the deep cleaning so I’m not sure if the deep cleaning did much of anything, but we will see.

I asked earlier if you had scrubbed the skimmer and (removed) scrubbed and checked the weir doors. Is it jest that their was dirty water, or have you not scrubbed the skimmer?

I don’t scrub them daily, but I scrubbed them when I started, and then as soon as the water started to clear up and we check them daily. This was not anything on the skimmers. It was brown cloudy water that filled them up while I was doing the deep clean.

Just catching back up on your adventure. Hopefully the deep cleaning of the sand & the lower/slower filtering will get things moving along.
About your cc’s - try cleaning your beaker with alcohol or ammonia free windex (rinse it well afterwards) sometimes old ucky stuff likes to stick around.
I see you also have deck jets & bubblers - are you also running slam level water through those for an hour or so daily? Any auto fill or overflow drain that may be gunky?
After that only stone left unturned is drain covers if you have them. The lack of overnight chlorine loss is a good sign. Try not to get discouraged, keep at it, replenishing slam level as often as you can😊

I'll make sure to clean the beaker. I am not running any of the water features because we just don’t use them. In fact I keep the bubblers plugged and never cut the deck jets on. Unless we happen to have company with young kids which doesn’t happen every season then we don’t use the slide either. we do have an auto fill valve, but the previous owners broke it at the above ground plumbed part and so the pool guy plugged it before we moved in. I’m trying not to get discouraged, but man this has been an ordeal. I have slammed many times in the past with success, granted I have not started with a green swamp but definitely started from the point that I’ve been at for the last week and had it move quickly from there.
