Hi All,

I have the Waterway Power Defender 140 pool pump. It works very well for me, but unfortunately the plastic basket that goes inside doesn't fit very well and has some pretty large gaps that allows for fairly large debris to reach the impeller. Please see below for a picture showing the gaps. I tried ordering another basket, but it fits exactly the same so I'm not sure what to do... Any thoughts?

T,

I know nothing about waterway pumps, but if you used hairnets in your skimmers, there would be no debris to get into your pump basket...

I use them and what they capture is disgusting..

Are you vacuuming right into your filter?

Thanks,

Jim R.

As other have said, you should try a skimmer net. While some of that debris might be getting into the impeller through the small gaps, most of it is actually being pulled through the openings in the basket itself. Use to see it a lot in Sta-Rite Max-E-Glass 1 pumps where the basket fit was quite tight and actually "bayonetted" into the pot so as not to "bounce" out of position. That type of debris would still get through.

Are you using a skimmer sock back at the skimmer basket? If not, I would do that right away. It will catch most of that stuff (and more) before it gets to the pump.

I use a skimmer sock in my skimmer basket, so I'm 99% sure all this debris getting through my pump basket is because of my vacuum, something I can't really help with a sock anywhere.

And I wish I took a picture, but you could see that lots of debris was indeed getting out around those gaps, and not through the normal "basket holes". There was a lot of debris on the outside of the basket right near the gaps.

Are you sure that it is the right basket?

What is the part number?

Is it oriented correctly?

Can you show a picture of the basket out of the pump and of the pump without the basket?

Look into an inline leaf/debris canister for your vacuum/pool cleaner hose.

List the exact model number of your Waterway pump.

It’s the Waterway Power Defender 140 (PD-140). It’s pretty new and this basket is the one that came with the new unit. I also tried purchasing a replacement basket, part number 319-1430, but it arrived and was identical - still fitting poorly. I can’t take a picture right now, but I’ll try to send a few more tomorrow.

Make sure there isn’t a little key on the basket that fits into a slot in the pump housing. I had mine out of alignment because of that once. It’ll keep the basket from sitting down in the opening properly.
