Overflow

Do most inground pools have an overflow of some kind (like to compensate for a heavy rain)?
If so, is there a location where I would most likely find one?

It is a good idea to have one in Florida, Houston, etc. Where they get rain.

In Gold Canyon AZ, no need.

In the tile line above the normal water level or in the skimmer.

Oh yes I have! We have them too. But rarely would you see 4-6" at one time. And likely a little overflow in your climate would be of little harm.

Or it could be at the top of the tile line.

My overflow pipe was just a 2" PVC line into the side of the pool located at a height where it would keep the water level from reaching the top of the skimmer.

Fwiw, our pool has an autofill built into the deck that uses exactly the same gizmo you can buy at Home Depot for your toilet tank. This handles overflow and fill. It's 14 years old. We've had it for 2.5. So far trouble free.

Mine overflows to the auto-cover vault, which in turn drains to the street.
