Replacing the bottom manifold - pipe fitting is stuck

Hi Pool Friends,

I was cleaning my cartridge filters recently and realized that the bottom manifold is cracked.

Hayward C3025 filter.

I bought a replacement manifold and I watched a helpful YouTube video, so I understand what I need to do. But I’m stuck at 1 specific step. The pipe that connects to the outside of the filter won’t budge or loosen at all.

I’m wondering- what if I broke the bottom manifold in half in order to extract it? Would it be possible to replace the bottom manifold that way?

I know it’s not an ideal solution, and if it fails, I’ll have to replace the whole system most likely. Just not sure what else to do. Ideas and suggestions welcome.

Remove the filter away from unions before trying to unscrew buttress assembly. I use large channel locks. Breaking the collector won’t work the buttress screws into the collector manifold.

Got it. I’ve been using a oil change wrench on it. Might need to buy a channel lock. I guess breaking it won’t work then. Thank you so much for replying, I appreciate it.

I had a strap wrench when I started so I used it. When I finally broke down on year 5 and bought 16 inch channel locks, I KICKED myself for not doing it on day one. Both Home Depot and Harbor Freight have $20 pairs. No need to buy the pricey ones for an occasional tool.

Finished! My wife helped me loosen the pipe when I was ready to totally give up. After that, everything went smoothly.

This is what I got and they are comically large. Cartoonish even. If anything else is stuck I threaten that I will go get these, and whatever was stuck always quits at the threat.
