So a friend dropped some stuff at my house a few minutes ago, called and said my pool was peeing water. They sent me this video. I haven't seen it yet myself. I had them shut the pump off and the leak stopped. I know there's a return in the steps very near this little whatever it is. Either the same step or one above it. I'd always thought this was maybe a cap of some type for a non-existent handrail. It's never leaked before, maybe 1" or 1-1/4" pipe about 2" tall. There's not one on the other side of the steps. I do know the puppy I'm babysitting right now was chewing on it briefly last night (until I put a stop to that) so I suspect that's why it's leaking now.

Any ideas how to fix this? I'll investigate further when I get home from work and post back.

Look like the control knob for a spa jet that is sometimes installed by steps.

How to fix depends what the puppy wrecked.

Sometimes that stair return is setup as a "spa jet" that can have air bubbles and a knob like that controls it.

Looking back at an old picture, I'd bet you're right. They're right in line with each other.
I'll have to look at the damage when I get home.

Pics of damage. Looks like just a push on cap that was already deteriorating and some kind of tape. I don’t care about any spa bubbler function so maybe just glue a pvc cap over it if that will work? Hole in the side is aimed toward the pool.

It's a venturi step jet.

The tube should provide air.

The eyeball is too small and it is forcing water out of the tube instead of pulling in air.

The eyeball looks brand new.

When was the eyeball installed?

Remove the eyeball or get a larger diameter orifice.

Below, you can see the original orifice size.

I think that the original orifice was 1".

The existing one looks like 1/2".

Once again, I’ll say how awesome y’all are! That’s the eyeball that was there when I bought the house. I have a 3/4” in the shed so I’ll put that in. I’ll have to order a new cap. The puppy chewed a chunk out of the cap so it won’t stay on at this point. It never leaked before before she chewed it and there’s never been any kind of “bubble” function that I’ve seen but I’m sure that’s because I had no clue what this thing was. At least it’s an easy fix!

Be careful, the tube plugs into the hole, but it can break loose if you put too much stress on the tube.

If the tube breaks loose, it's usually best to just shut off the flow using the valve at the equipment and plug the hole at the steps.

I’ll be careful. Ordered a replacement cap and bushing. I’ll have to rig something to stop the fountain til that gets here but it’s doable. I didn’t see any sign of a bushing in the old stuff so who knows. I’ve found a lot of badly done “fixes” in this house. This is probably just another.

I’d like to keep the return functioning for the step sweeping. If I can make this thing work as a fancy hydro hoozit my old knee will be happy!

You have two return lines at the equipment pad.

Yes I do.

One line goes to the step return jet and the other line goes to the regular returns

I’ll test that shortly and report back. I’ve never known why there were two return lines and hadn’t thought of testing it with the replumb finished.

$3 fix. Crutch tip and a little lube so it will come back off when the real parts get here.

Might be a permanent fix LOL!

Switched the new Jandy valve around and James was 100% correct. Nice to know what goes where. Left it at 25% to the step jet and seems happy. I’ll swap out the eyeballs for the other jets tomorrow since they’re small also and see how it does.

Thank you!!!
