Decoy’s Above Ground Pool Saga

I figured! Thanks for the fast response! I guess it was a good thing I couldn’t install it right away. I think if I drill a larger hole I can get that sucker outta there.
Do u have one of those flexible things w/ a magnet on the end? What is the drill bit made of?

when I was using jug weights I filled them with coarse sand/gravel then put bleach and water in, I think I used half and half, don't remember. I still have some of them weighing down a couple milk crates for an awning. still no algae after a couple of years.
I also cap the tops with duct tape before putting the lids on because bleach jug lids are vented. My jugs are on year 4 - they live in the pool year round.

I don’t have one of those. Im not sure if they are magnetic but I can test the other bits in the case to see. My best idea was to drill a hole big enough to get the piece out then plug the hole. Probably will wait until the weekend now so I don’t have to rush.
make a weight(s) out of bleach bottles or length of large diameter pvc capped off. easier to keep clean and move around than gravel inside ladder.

Yes- something completely sealed or algae will grow 🤢

Didn’t get algae last year with the prev owners gravel filled ladder. But who knows if they did. In the manual it says use sand. The holes in the stringers of the ladder surely would leak sand out I can’t see that as the right way to go so I want to avoid that.

So you just attach the weighted jugs to the ladder and that’s what holds it down?

Yes- i have wedding cake steps
It came with a tube that fits in one of the steps as its only weight- it’s not enough.
I have 4 bleach jugs w/ sand & concrete hanging underneath with a poly rope. My steps are also attached to my deck. Since the jugs hang i can vac/brush underneath them through the hole for the step weight without moving the steps.
I detach the handrail that screws to the deck & pull my steps, clean them & put them back at the end & beginning of the season so i just sit the jugs on the 2nd step through the winter - they don’t float or anything.
Sand in the steps is a terrible idea- the installers put sand in my step weight & it was a nasty mess quickly. I now have concrete in country time lemonade containers sealed with duct tape in it.
Here’s some ideas 👇

I used to have these in my pool. at first I just tied the jugs on, but then I built a little shelf inside and underneath with a couple of lengths of one inch pvc (capped) for them to sit on. if you have this type and you ever want to get them out of the pool, use external weights. if they are full of sand it can be really hard to lift them out.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I have just a regular ladder. We wanted the type with the step at the top of the ladder so people don’t step on the rail. This is the one I have:

I wanted the confer version of this since that one has more adjustment on the deck legs. This one seems fine but water alone makes it want to float.

I think zip tying some weights to the rear barrier would work and be out of the way. Hopefully I can get that drill bit out.

I like concrete filled pvc pipes with glued caps. Usually with the big staircases they put several 2 footers inside the bottom but you could probably do one long one down either side in the back.

I may give that a shot with either concrete or gravel which I have already. I like the glued cap concept so leaking won’t be an issue. The manual says 20 lbs of sand in each leg but maybe one heavy one in the middle will do it.

I always throw those reccomendations to the side and go with what feels right. Kinda like cooking with garlic. One clove ? Pffffffft. *Adds 5 and tastes*

So electrical inspection happened. Our old receptacle post is only 5’ away from pool wall. Needs to be pushed back to 6’. The bonding is also not 4-6” from final grade. I had my final grade set the day they came. Instead of digging 4-6” down they kinda pushed more dirt against the pool wall and made their own “grade” which made it 4”. When I push that dirt back down it will be too shallow. No pass today. It would pass if I wanted my pool buried 6” or more all around which I don’t.

That means I have to move the post, redo the plumbing and get the electrician back to fix bonding and move the receptacle. :(

Good news is the inspector was very nice. I hope I get him again.

sigh...................really guys? How did they not know that would fail??? I hope THEY have to pay for the new inspection since THEY were the ones that caused it!

Right now, we still have a regular ladder- no steps yet. I used empty chlorine jugs filled with pea gravel and some chlorine. I epoxied my caps on. I'm just hanging mine with zip ties, hooked on the third step up. This lets them stay fairly well behind the first two steps, for less user interference.

I adjusted ours to just touch the pool floor; keeps them in place, but no constant load on the ladder. (I'm already a load on the ladder!) Our ladder felt wobbly enough prior to adding some "stay-puts" that I didn't want to tempt fate.

Also, my 1.5 cu. ft. bag of pea gravel, which weighed around 50 lbs., ($4.99@ Tractor Supply) was enough to do 4 jugs- two in the pool and two outside on the ground. It's anchored! (At least until we add a deck with some steps next year when everything will be cheaper. It's TRUE! I read it on the internet!)

Spoke with the electrician. He already had put a call in with the town and was waiting to hear back. His understanding is that since my receptacle post was there it should be grandfathered in. As for the grading, I think his guys were just going as fast as they could and rushed it. It was 10am and already 86* out.

He said he will get me sorted. I don’t think I have to pay for an additional inspection. Although I’m not 100%.

Dang I`m glad I live in the country with no codes and Red tape. I just have my common sense and knowing right from wrong.........

I’m just trying to do things right and getting punished haha.

Honestly this guy was really nice. He was going to pass the bonding but asked if that was my final grade and only failed it when I showed him where I was putting the final grade . Better to fail now than after I backfill!

As for the post he was trying to see if I could gain a few inches by flipping the receptacle to the other side of the post but then checked the book and said it was too close.

He did check the bonding lugs and measure a few things.

I worked as a carpenter from age14 to 26 and any houses we built in Tulsa County the building inspectors were very tough. I know they had the homeowner's best interest but there was some god complex too. I was taught through these years no matter what they said it was yes sir and we`ll fix, or change whatever they deemed deficient.
We had a lot of the same inspectors building new homes in South Tulsa anywhere from 2500` to 5000`sqft homes during this time. Once they seen we knew our place and never argued with them. They gave us no grief from that point forward. They would actually complement our work and say thank you making their job easy.
Keep it up Decoy you`ll get that stamp of approval soon.
