Pool Coping issues

Hi, I have a question about the coping of our new pool being constructed. The cement under the coping tile sticks out, at places, up to 2 1/2 inches from the end of the coping tile. This doesn't matter when you have patio tiles going up to it, but on half of the pool, on the back of the pool, grass will be planted right up to the pool. ( The reason we can't have tiles around the pool being that we have too much impervious space according to the pool inspector) It seems to me that grass will have a hard time covering that unsightly edge? I have spoken to the company who are putting in our patio/flagstone and they say they can cut out/ or trim the section that sticks out, but now the pool company say that then they will not warranty the pool, it that edge is primed. I am speculation the reason it is sticking out so much, is that the workers who put it in didn't know that grass was going there?
Any thoughts on this subject ? Would greatly appreciate it ! Thanks Margareta from Cary NC
PS: Please see the photo to understand

Yes, they did not plan it out properly. Have the same setup, where the back has a section right up to the grass (big mistake on my part, as mowing is now an issue). They should have made the required beam width the standard but went extra width for paver ledge on deck side. How wide is the beam around? You can't really fix now, as I wouldn't cut away at the beam. If you can swing it, a few rows of paver decking will save you a lot of grief with grass in the pool on edging it.

Ask the inspector if pavers or some other hardscape can be put over the exposed concrete if you add some additional drainage/drywell to the yard or something along those lines. The need for a certain amount of permeable area is to limit run off usually. Might be able to add a course of pavers and a french drain next to it or somewhere else to keep water from running off your property. Have you measured to see how many square feet more you would need or how close to the limit you are? you could leave it exposed and add something after the project is finished and you have all your approvals.

Thank you so very much for your replies, they really help!! I am new to the forum so I didn't realize until now that there were replies, since I was looking for an email saying I had one! 😏 As answer to your answers, our beam is 12 inches and the coping pieces are 12x12 , they do stick out from 1/2 inch to even 1 1/2 Inch depending on the curve. We have no more imperious space to spare unfortunately. Our backyard have a large amount of hardscape pavers, and too expensive a project to put in new that would require less space. We got quotes of another 50,000 + to do that. Like you advised, now we probably have to just do the best with what there is. A French drain may help to allow a bit more surface tiles but then again here in the Raleigh-Durham all contractors are so back logged that any additional work will be difficult to realize. Looking into your suggestion of a border other then grass. We already removed an area with compact gravel to comply with the impervious space? Not sure if just a plain, loose border of gravel or a mulch border is appropriate ( or ok for the impervious space) next to the pool? Also our pool company just informed us that if we don't install grass right after the pool is finished we will have to cover the ground with mulch since otherwise the wind will bring clay into our pool !? This whole project was started the first week of January and is now only at this stage, feels a bit overwhelming but hopefully worth it at the end. 😎Thanks Bob and Margareta Cary NC

So what I see you saying is you cannot put anything like pavers or such around the pool? Ask if you can put REMOVEABLE pavers around the pool.

and the mulch will not blow in to the pool?? sigh...............and my guess is they want you to pay them to put it down?

What does your "rules" say can go around the edge up the pool? Grass? fake grass?

Thanks so much for your suggestions ! 🌺 And I fully get your skepticism, but I actually lucked out and got the problem with having to have the (clay) earth covered, since I found a contractor who will put in sod, in time. This sprinkler guy said that here in the south they commonly put some kind of mulch like substance down waiting for grass to be planted when the pool is finished in the summer, since the grass doesn't grow well when planted in the heat, but alas, I lucked out and found this sprinkler guy who can do it. And low and behold the sprinkler/lawn guy also said that as long as they remove the excess mortar on the ledge that sticks out from the coping the grass should cover it, and he will install turf too, ) Since it is to be put in a relatively small area. He is a small business latino guy and gave me a great price.

PS: I know the picture I sent is not the most flattering... the pool shape, on the picture looks a bit like a peanut...but it is a bit of an optical illusion. in the right angle it looks pretty good. I will send a picture of the finished product, and let you know if works out with the grass. We have had many major renovations in houses we lived in but this has been the worst experience so far. The process has taken an eternity ...The pool company just couldn't find the coping color we wanted even though they showed us pictures of it, so we ended up with this silver color. Also They had to move the overflow outlet ( this week !) since they placed it on the grass and not where the flagstones go, ( like the contract said) As you suggested if the grass doesn't cover the ugly coping that sticks out we will consider some stones or removable pavers. 😎Margareta
