Best Places to Buy Liquid Chlorine

For my fellow DFW residents, here is a list I've compiled of places around me.

The cheapest I've found is Pinch-a-Penny, who quoted me $3.99/gal if you buy >= 20 gallons. If anyone ever wanted to split 20 gallons with me, let me know. The store told me 20 gallons can be split over multiple containers.

Updated July 8, 2022: My local Wal Mart and Home Depot appear to have stopped carrying Pool Essentials 10% chlorinating liquid.
Updated July 12, 2022: Back in stock at my local Wal Mart - but be forewarned most Wal Marts keep it outside.

I went to Walmart earlier this morning for other items. I decided to grab a few bottles of Pool Essentials on my way out just because I was already there. I pulled them off the shelf where it was marked as $4.63. When I went to the self checkout, they were scanning up at $4.97. I called for help and they gave me my few jugs at $4.63, but also said that the price went up overnight and they did not have the time to change the signage yet. I would think this is probably a national thing as it is showing up online today too (and wasn't last night).

Walmart in west hills has 10% pool essentials Julian date 22 161 (june 10) for $4.63. I bought 12. Not sure how long it takes 10% to degrade - going to keep it in my garage and see how it goes.
The HASA dealer by me charges about $6.50 per gallon of 12.5%. That’s where I normally buy it, but wanted to save some money since WM had a relatively fresh batch.

For my fellow DFW residents, here is a list I've compiled of places around me. Pool Essentials from WalMart remains the best deal - somehow it's even cheaper than their own private label bleach in the laundry aisle!

Home Depot sells the same product for slightly cheaper, but they keep it outdoors so I judge the modest savings aren't worth the risk of stale chlorine.

I bought 25 gallons [in 5 gal containers] for $53.75 that's 12.5%. That's $2.15/gal or .01676/oz. You have to add in tax and driving.

You also have to buy a sticker that indicates the container contains corrosive material and how it's to be handled. Sticker is $2.

You can buy a 5 gal plastic container from them, or go to Lowes and get the 5gal bucket that has liter & gal markings, then a top that has a pour spout.

Used to go for only 5 gal 5 yrs ago, but the drive from West Hou to Spring is 32 miles one way...I increased my vol to now 5 units of 5gal/unit.

Pluses - Best pricing anywhere, 12.5% concentration, very friendly people, great guy named Alfred that dispenses
Neg's [for me] - long driving distance, containers are heavy, transport INSIDE my truck bc heat degrades, have to transfer them to 1 gal bleach containers [so daughters can dispense when I'm OOT], need storage place in house to keep inside bc heat degrades [this changes for fall/winter]

Let me know if you need name of business and address? tstex

Same thing happened to me in Southern California

$5 at Wally world near me. Just got swcg going a few weeks ago but like to have some chlorine on hand just in case. But I love the salt water clorine gen.

Did you get yours as Napco Chemical? If so, they have been hit or miss a lot lately. I’ve been there 3 times in a row and they have either said they were sold out or they were holding the rest of the chlorine for the water treatment facilities. I’ve never had that issue in the past but now that I have 3 times now, it has pushed me over the edge and am converting to swcg!

Yes JD. I always call before I go and ask if they are pouring bleach today....I have never gone there w out calling first.

If I drove all the way there and they decided not to pour the bleach to drive-ups, I can assure you I would make the Nat'l news**...I would be beyond livid. Do you call b4 you go!

** only venting....

PS - I just called them and they will have bleach tomorrow...go as early as you can. They said they get three 5000 gallon deliveries per day and if one of the trucks don't show, it causes problems...you are good to go for tomorrow if you need some...

Kroger has their store brand bleach (7.5%) for $3.99 for an 81 oz bottle, often less if you have a Kroger member number. It may not be the best value, but it’s certainly convenient and stored indoors. It’s similar to the WalMart pricing.

Yeah, convenient but that comes to 6.31/gal for 7.5%...which comes to about $10.52/gal when compared to 12.5%. So, 25 gal would cost me $263 vs $53.XX, so It's worth the drive.

PS - bleach is starting to follow the dog food style of mkting....There's really no more 50lb bags...the price keeps going up and the vol keeps going down too...kind of a poor value proposition. Now the big bags are 37.5 labs, down from 45lbs, to 42.5lbs to 40lbs and now 37.5lbs..ea time the price goes up.

Yea I typically call before I go. Yesterday I called at 8am but by the time I was able to get there, they already sold out. I’ll make sure to be there at 8am.

I completely understand. If I didn’t have a SWCG, I’d probably be much more mindful of cost. I only occasionally add a gallon of bleach, maybe 1 every couple of months, just to push chlorine back up if it has drifted down.
