motor tripping breaker when in full sun

We're on our 3rd pool pump motor in 7 years. The motor sits in shade until the heat of the day starts and then it's in full sun until evening, it'll start just fine after it's cooled off. When I placed an umbrella over the motor it stayed running all day. We can't continue to use the umbrella method because this is Nebraska and well, wind, hail, tornados and more wind. A shade sail won't because we don't have a good spot for posts and it'd probably end up in Iowa anyway.

Is this normal lifespan for pumps or are we just having bad luck? It's an AO smith which replaced the Hayward super pump.

Someone needs to do an amp-draw test with the motor in the sun. That's very unusual unless the wrong motor is being used.

Wow! 3 pumps in 7 years?!? Something is wrong here......? Are you confident in the wiring to that plug? Were there warranty claims made?

Maddie :flower:
Hayward wasn't covered because pool guy passed away and therefore the warranty passed with him. Inyopools said the replacement is not covered under warranty. We can check the wiring when we replace the next one.

"someone"....you mean the same guy that works in a hot shop all day on cars that he can't get parts for anymore and what parts he does get are junk? I normally find him in the pool after work, how do I lure him out in the heat and sun to check the motor? I'll try!! It's the right motor.

You could try something like this pool pump motor cover. In the east they help protect the motor from weather, but I think this would only be a bandaid. Like someone else said, check the amperage draw, it could be a bad seal or bearing causing friction.

How old is the current motor?

Can you show a picture of the motor label?

What impeller do you have?

What is the pump model number?

Check the voltage and amperage with the motor running.

For followup, at the sub panel and we changed out the Eaton with a Siemens which is heavier duty. We then installed a go kit and new motor. Since then we no longer have a 2 minute wait for the pump basket to fill with water (the equipment pad is uphill) it now fills immediately, nor do we have any issues with the motor shutting down. We did all of this during the 100+degree weekend with 116 heat index at night with flashlights and deet...lots of deet. Now on to the groundhog vs foundation problem.
