Aquapure 1400 - New cell, No chlorine

I replaced my cell after 4 years when it seemed to stop producing much chlorine. After replacing the cell, cable and sensor it’s not consistently producing chlorine. Power cycling the unit appears to start it in different cycles. If I get ‘on’ and ‘flow’ it produces chlorine. If it starts in ‘reversing’ it appears to be stuck and produces no chlorine. I’ve even seen it start with the cell ‘resting’ and ‘reversing on at the same time.

No error codes. Checked the wires and installation. Lights appear normal. Levels are all within range.

I assume there’s always the chance the issue wasn’t with the original cell (4 years old) and instead the board. Is there a way to factory reset the board?

Thanks in advance for the support. This forum has always provided a wealth of knowledge.

Here’s an example of the cycle it’s running so far today at 30%, lots of resting….

8:00 (Power-up) - Reversing, Resting
9:40 - Reversing, Resting
9:50 - Reversing, On
11:00 - Resting
12:00 - Resting
12:40 - Resting
1:10 - Resting
1:30 - Resting
2:00 - Reversing, Resting
2:05 - Reversing
2:08 - Reversing, Resting
2:30 - Reversing, Resting
2:50 - Reversing, On
3:05 - Reversing, Resting
4:00 - Reversing, Resting
5:00 - Resting

This is weird. Even when the cell is reversing, it's supposed to be generating chlorine according to the manual. No error codes is kind of ominous.

But here are some ideas from another AquaPure owner, non-expert, though some kind of techie:
  • Make double sure the sensor is plugged into the back board correctly. My old one would happily go in both ways. Yikes.
  • Make sure you've followed the setup procedure for the new sensor.
  • Carefully remove each connector, shoot it with some good contact cleaner, and reassemble. Along the way look for things burned, deteriorated, or otherwise not right. These say what needs replacement. Example: My box is exposed to the Carolina sun. Wiring insulation turned to dust because it was in contact with the box's top panel. Luckily, it was sensor wiring so a new sensor fixed it.
  • I ran across this troubleshooting guide. It's for the old square cell, so might be out of date. But it's the most detailed info I've seen on pool electronics. Note the maker is in the habit of printing expected measurements on the circuit board. That's cool. Even if the document is out of date, using those is something to try.
  • Since you're into them several hundred $$$ already for the new cell, I'd try Jandy tech support.

Thanks for your feedback @generessler.
  • I was a little worried about the sensor plug as well, especially considering the original mini-flow board appeared to have to go in upside down. Looking at pics it appears the blue wire is on the left which is how mine is setup.
  • The setup procedure is really around setting the correct program (A) and that was done.
  • The only item I noticed is the small box on the bottom right (not sure what it is), doesn't look normal. Pic attached.
  • Looking at the cycle pattern above it just seems odd that it's resting so much.
  • One other odd note is that I once checked it after the pump had turned off and it still showed 'flow'.
I'll checkout the manual and try to reach out to tech support once again (they were unavailable Friday).

If the sensor synced with an "A," that's all good.

But the board is not. I'm sorry to say that box at the lower right should be clear and not bubbled and warped by heat. That's a relay. It's what controls the high current power to the cell in response to small signals from the microprocessor that's also on the board. It looks like the internals have burned up. Here's a fresh one for comparison. You might be able to replace the relay and be okay, but it's also possible the board is toast. (If the relay is not pluggable, replacement is a job for an electronics tech. Unless you can do that kind of work, might as well go for the new board.)
