Pump to Filter Plumbing Question

This is a minor detail, but I would like to understand.

Some run the plumbing from the pump up, 90 degree turn, then straight to the filter.

But I've seen where the plumbing from the pump goes up, higher than the filter inlet, then bends down, then bends to go to the filter.

I don't understand why somebody would go to the trouble of plumbing with these bends if there wasn't a benefit. The only thing I can think of is maybe it helps when the pool pump is restarted, as water would be left in the line by the filter.

It was probably done like that to fit the union in and give space if the return nipple starts to leak, very common pre heat unions. If he went straight across the 90 would almost be flush with the return side, more fittings and schedule 80 to fix.

They're both plumbed right. You want to have about 8 inches to a foot of straight pipe coming out of the pump return. It's not mandatory, but it's the ("best") way manufacturers teach us to install pumps.
