Spider Gasket Confusion

Hi Everyone! I've got some conflicting information I'm not sure how to deal with. I've been doing some reading and some of the pool problems I'm having seem to stem from a worn out Spider Gasket so I've been looking in to replacing that.

I looked at my Hayward Filter and I see a sign on it that says the Model #S180TC. My manual, that came with the filter, says SP0714TC/SP0714TE/SP0714T Vari-Flo XL Valve. I'm confused as to which it is. I'm thinking that the S180TC is maybe the Tank model number and the SP0714 is the Top part which has the lever on it?

I called my local pool place about the Gasket and they said that the Spider Gasket will be glued in and that I can't just buy a gasket, I have to buy a complete Assembly ( which is $70 ) to replace the gasket. I don't want to just do that until I'm sure that's what I have to do, not just what they're telling me to do... So that being said:

1. Do I need a gasket for a SP0714 or a S180TC. What is the difference there.
2. Has anyone changed a spider gasket in this type of filter? Do I really need to replace the whole housing the gasket is set in for $70?

Thanks for the advice/info. I'm new to the pool thing so I've got a lot to learn :)

Thanks!

Thanks to both of you! Sooo much to learn :) This is my third season with a pool and I'm really just starting to learn what things actually mean and do. I've been lucky the last 2 years because things went smoothly with just shock and the equipment working 100%. Not so much this year. I know why the gasket is shot, because I changed the position of the lever with the Pump running... so lesson learned the hard way there.

I need to figure out everything I have to put in my Signature from the looks of it :)

Thanks again! I'm sure I'll be back with more questions!
