Green algae

Hello all,

I have a thick layer of green algae on the bottom that I’ve spent one day, beginning at the deep end, removing by hand with a 20-inch leaf rake, because I feel it may be too thick for my Pentair GW9500 Kreepy Krauly.

I know it doesn’t look it, but I actually started over on the left side by the skimmer, so that’s not quite as thick anymore. I only have some time on my weekends, at this rate it’s going to take a while.

I don’t have a before picture, but the water was dark green and I couldn’t see the bottom, but after six 2.5 gallon jugs of chlorine from Leslie’s since last Thursday, here’s where I’m at today.

That said, I’ve thought about just draining it and starting from scratch, so I’m wondering whether or not I’m on the right track or what you would do?

I appreciate your feedback!

If it would be safe to drain and refill, that will speed the process, but you will still need follow the SLAM Process

What is the water table in your area?

The SLAM Process is what you need to follow. If you elect to change some water in advance, just be sure to not empty the pool completely as you do not want to risk pool pop-out. Leave at least a couple feet or more in there. The SLAM Process works if you follow those instructions carefully.

To drain the pool it is best to rent a sump pump or buy a sump pump from Amazon, Harbor Freight, etc.

You need to determine where you will send the effluent.

In SE Florida, I would be hesitant to drain a pool. As Pat said, you might get away with lowering it a couple feet and refilling.
