Just a few days ago I cleaned the cartridge filters but for some reason mucky water back flowed into the pump basket as the filter compartment was draining. So with the drain plug still removed from filter, I briefly ran the pump to clear the mucky water. After cleaning the filters I ran in pool mode and spa mode no problems.
Today the pump ran on schedule no problems until 1pm. At 7pm when I went to start filter pump it sounded dry, and I noticed low water level in the pump basket as it was trying to pump. The pressure gauge was reading zero. My skimmer basket was at the normal water level. I tried 2 times to get it running but no luck. It wasn't pulling enough water into the pump basket. So I poured water in the basket, and this time it worked.
Now I am left wondering if I have a problem? Any thoughts to ease my mind, or should I be worried.

Check for a skimmer weir stuck in the up position. It needs to swing freely. That can be one cause.
My skimmer basket has 2 parts. an inner and outer piece that floats with the water but lately it keeps coming apart when I take it out for cleaning. So you might be onto something there. I do remember it getting stuck in the past and hearing the pump sucking air. How the 2 pieces are supposed to be aligned so that it doesn't get stuck is beyond me.

Actual picture of my skimmer basket. I checked the pump basket this morning and it is full of water same as last night.
Never cared for those skimmer add-ons. The little tab on the interior part is supposed to keep it from raising too high with high water level or when there is a backflow from the pump when it shuts off. Too often they get stuck in the up position as they wear and it causes the issue you are experiencing. A good-old spring loaded weir door in the skimmer opening seems to have the fewest problems. I will even cut them slightly narrower than they come so that they have fewer misalignment problems. Doesn't seem to affect efficiency
