We have had our inground for 7 years and would like to convert to a salt system with the opening our pool this month. I am confident I can handle the plumbing on my own but have a few questions on layout. When I replace the feeder with a SWG, Do I need to keep a valve and bypass like what is shown here; If not necessary is there a benefit? Is there a solvent I can use rhat would allow salvage of the valve?- Id like a clean install with no more bends or couplers than absolutely necessary.

Thanks in advance for your input.

No.

No.

Cut the pipe flush with the valve and use the next size PVC on the outside of the valve.

Or read in here for techniques to reuse the socket in the valve...

Thank you. Is the sole purpose of the valve to regulate flow thru the feeder? Thought I remember my Pool builder saying something about cavitation.

I don't know what I'm talking about, but after 7 years I just switched (in the middle of switching) to SWG. I added a check valve before the heater, and plumbed so I could bypass both if needed. I don't think a bypass of the SWG was needed, but while I had the whole pump station torn apart to replace the heater and add swg I figured it couldn't hurt. Your loop looks like the SWG might fit right in where you take the chlorinator out. I just ordered a fitting saver from Amazon and with a little luck I will be able to save the plumbing manifold that exits the system if I can just save I fitting.

Not that I'm aware. Using heat to break PVC glue renders the salvaged parts incapable of taking pressure.

I bought this little guy from my local plumber's supply house. It's well worth it, allowed me to cut and reuse several fittings and check valves on my SWG install. Paid for itself with the one use.

This...

There's no reason to buy a reemer or use solvent on the valve. Just buy a single 2.5" coupler and a 2.5" to 2" reducer bushing. It'll cost you about $5.

I don't know enough about plumbing to say with confidence, but there were also couplers and elbows that I reamed out and reused, just because it was easier that way. Not sure if this method works to slip a fitting on the outside of a standard slip fitting and expect any kind of seal. It also lets me redo "oops" slip joints without having to take another trip to the store. At $60 or so, somebody might find value in that. It's very likely mine will gather dust and not touch PVC for a very long time. Still worth it in my book.

Also, please let's don't tell my wife it's not necessary for me to justify buying a new tool because of projects. "It'll pay for itself on the first use, honey." is still working very well at my house, thankyaverymuch.

and plumbed so I could bypass both if needed.

I did much the same. I kept the chlorinator but now have a true heater bypass (so I can take it entirely out of the loop if needed) and still run chlorination. Or I can bypass all of that and just run straight from the filter back to the pool with no heat or chlorine.

Thank you all! Plumbing and electric was installed by the builder to support a future heater that she wanted but we still do not have. I fight leaves in early fall so I cannot see extending fall pool use via a heater. Gonna try a solar cover here this year to see if it helps speed/maintain early season temps. She thinks she wants a heater….. we’ll probably end up with a heater soon.

Secret is safe with me. Especially since I use that same justification!
