Should I cover pool while SLAMing

I'm in NY and always open in the middle of April to a clear pool. I decided to take a peak this weekend and was stunned it was green. Last week the lows were in the 20s and highs in the 30s so it's very strange to me. Anyway, started the SLAM process and then thought since sunlight consumes chlorine why not cover my pool? Also, it's going to rain as well tomorrow so the cover won't let the rainwater dilute the chlorine.

Is this the correct thinking? Should I cover my pool or let the chlorine 'breath'. My CYA is 40 and my chlorine is 22. Thank you.

I suggest not covering. The rain is inconsequential. If covered, you will not brush enough. Brushing is very important.
No need to exceed SLAM level FC.

I used to uncover the pool, then try to maintain SLAM, and get my CYA back up, but with work schedule, it was difficult, the sun would allow the algae to bloom. Last year I left the winter cover on and got my chemistry up and circulating while the temp was still in the 50°F range. Very little algae this time. I’m gonna do the same this year once cold weather is gone.

Don’t cover the pool during the SLAM Process.

The process generates CCs that you want the sun to burn off. With the cover on both your pool and cover will become chlorine stinky.

Interesting. When I used to slam also in the summer I would leave my solar cover on as well. Same thing with solar cover? Leave it off while slamming?

How did that go with the solar cover on?

The solar cover may pass some UV.

I guess ok, it cleared up from cloudy with a green tinge to clear in maybe 5 days. So I guess it was fine. The pool wasn't green like it is now so I guess I'll uncover my winter cover.

Was just worried it would drop my chlorine quickly, but I guess having it burn of CCs is needed

This time of year in your area the sun will consumer maybe 2 ppm of chlorine a day.

Algae can consume 2 ppm or more of chlorine an hour.

If you are losing chlorine it is due to the algae not the sun. Keeping the cover on is not what is going to help your SLAM Process.
