Cleaning the skimmer basket

I'm a new pool owner and don't fully understand what I've inherited. I would really appreciate if some kind person could provide some advice regarding the robo-vac and skimmer (photos attached) before I disturb anything in order to clean...

First, when I took the lid off the skimmer, I found a brick and rock being used apparently to hold some things in place. In the case of the brick, it appears to be holding the position of a lever. I'm not entirely sure what to make of that, but fair enough...

Anyway, it appears that the robo-vac uses some sort of adapter that replaces the regular skimmer basket. What's the proper way to clean this? If any disassembly/assembly is required, what are the steps I need to take?

bx,

How many skimmers do you have?

If you only have one skimmer, then it should be used as a skimmer, not for a suction-side vacuum.

I can only assume all the bricks and rocks are just to make the flex pipe going to the vacuum stay in place.

The whole point of a skimmer is to "skim" the surface of the water and remove all the junk that falls into your pool.. Like bugs, leaves, and anything else that floats. Under the skimmer cover there should be a basket that captures all the junk that gets skimmed.

I use a robot cleaner.. They are powered by low voltage DC and do not require the pool pump to be running. Like this.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hi. There's a lot of unnecessary stuff jammed into that skimmer. If any of it dislodges you might end up destroying your pump. Sometimes it's good to keep things simple.. like Jim said, the skimmer is meant to skim.

Bx, looks like you might have an aquanaut cleaner. Here is a link to the manual so you can see what kind of hookup you are supposed to have. Hard to tell from your pictures, but looks different from the manual. not to mention the rocks.

I used to have a barracuda cleaner before i got a robot. This type of cleaner is not intended to be connected all the time, just when you want to run the cleaner for a few hours. As others have mentioned, the skimmer is meant to skim.

Welcome to TFP.
