Reviving out of service pool: FG & deck Refresh

a basket with a bar across the top of it ... The trick to getting all the floating stuff in the basket is to hook the puller on the skimmer basket handle, then as you are pulling it up, spin it gently
I made a pvc hook that I used for my old basket, so have the no bending covered IF I can keep the leaves in the basket. Will try the spin. (y)

Pull the basket with the pump on low so that the leaves don't try to back out. Also, have a spare clean basket to pop in immediately when you pull the dirty basket. Dump the basket before it gets jammed full of leaves.
Skimmer wasn't even 1/4 full and just was a major pain to empty. Gee, sure seems like my 40-year old skimmer had "advanced" design issues that the new ones lack. And it held more leaves. So dissappointing.

I bought a mini pool net that I use to get the remaining leaves from the skimmer after I pull the basket. It was called skimmer scooper on Amazon but sure any net small enough to fit in the opening and move around would work

I need to look for that. More then once I had small snakes in there. All have been garden snakes but still scary when you stock your hand in and something moves

I had better luck with the skimmer today. Opened the lid, had the pvc hook for the basket ready, then went over to turn off the pump. Fortunately there's a slight delay with the IntelliCenter before the pump actually quits and I was able to scurry back to the skimmer just in time to hook the basket before the leaves floated. :)

The first 4 lb of stabilizer granules is almost dissolved even though water temp is 60°. Got some salt in too, but by the time I get enough, the water'll be too cold for the SWG to work. T-day prep is time intensive right now, so pool getting bare minimum attention.

I always pull my skimmer basket when the pump is running higher speeds. That way it pulls the leaves down into the basket. If I try and pull with the pump running low speed, leaves float all over the place.

Never really occurred to me that the basket may break. There is a little bit of 'pull' to the basket, but nothing that I feel like it would cause it to break. I have venturi skimmers from A&A and only one of them has a suction line back to the pad. I only run that skimmer valve about 1/3 way open, most of my skimming action comes from the flow through the venturi.

Of course, if yours feels like you are going to break the basket, I would either do it at a lower speed, or when it's off.

Oh, I also have the skim pro towers added, so that the skimmers never completely plug off. I added them for the handle that will work with the skimmer hairnet, but the flow through the center is a nice feature.

I also turn the pump on high to empty my skimmer baskets, just keeps everything in them and makes it easy. I do not turn the pump off during the process. It can make it a little heavy to lift out from the suction, but never enough to break a basket. Also if they are real full I skim out what is on top. Rarely lose a leaf or debris in the process.

This is what I use for scooping out anything on top or if it is too full. Stole it right out of the kitchen and replaced it. I think I use the medium size one. https://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Ki...en+strainer+with+handle&qid=1638420677&sr=8-9

Yep. Pump stays on and I use an aquarium net to fish out any leaves that don’t fit in the basket. Then lift the basket out. The basket won’t break.

Looks my method of cleaning the skimmer is working ok for me.

Water too cold now for SWG to work, so going to delay bringing the salt level up completely. Going into a winter-maint mode, hopefully without the TX freeze angst again.

Next projects will be outside kitchen and solar panels for the pool. See you then! 👋
