Good day all,

I have a new pool that the PB has been running for about two weeks. I noticed today that there seems to be some pitting and blue discoloration on the travertine spillway. Any idea what could be causing this? I saw another post about blue appearing on the mortar, but this is definitely in/on the stone.

As always, thanks for any guidance.

P.s. There also seems to be more pitting on the travertine deck, but no discoloration. Maybe I didn't notice it before and it is just part of the natural stone, but I'll keep an eye on it.

Travertine has lots of holes in it, and they can be filled with grout to hide them.

Your photo looks like a hole that has been filled with with blue plaster and then covered over with grout. The grout appears to be washing away.

I'm curious to hear the results of this one!

I think I have it figured out. The PB was handling the first two weeks of start up and I was testing as we went along. I'm using the TF-pro kit and thought I was messing up the calcium hardness test. I couldn't get it to turn blue and it turns out I should have kept putting more drops in. I took a sample to the local pool store and the CH is 380. The PB said it is scale and suggested using diluted muriatic acid if I want to remove it.

I've taken over the chemicals and will be controlling my own destiny. Rest assured, more questions to come :)

Thanks for all the help! The people on this site are a gold mine of info and guidance.

Charlie

Do your own CH test. The pool stores test is likely low. They typically are.
I'll give it another go. I think I put in about 40 drops on the two occasions I tried and figured I couldn't tell the difference between purple and blue. I'm going to head out there now and give it another go. I might be ordering another bottle of R-0012 soon 😀

Any chance you would post a pic of your CH test results when it is "blue"?

Be sure to use a 10 ml water sample.
This is crazy. So I decided to take a pic at intervals of 10 to show how the color doesn't change. Well, when I compare the 20 drop pic with the 30 drop pic, I'm pretty sure that the test turned "blue." I guess I was expecting a darker blue and looking at the color one drop at a time, it doesn't really change color dramatically like the TA test.

The pics are at 0, 10, 20 and 30 drops of r-0012 respectively. Would you say the 30 drop picture is blue?

Interesting.

I always had trouble with seeing the transition to blue, but it looks pretty apparent to me in your pics. I wonder if the camera is doing something to make it more obvious? I might try taking pics as I go to see if it makes the test easier for me to read.

Yes, the 30 drop pic looks blue to me.

I see you have a speedstirrer. See that light blue on the buttons. That is what I use as a guide. So I would agree - 30 drops or 750ppm for the 10ml pool sample.
