Hello!
I am curious about valve positions/identification.
Obviously there is off and “not off” but sometimes the “not off” has more than one position and I’m wondering if it matters. For example the one labeled S for skimmers can be turned to three different positions. Valve off (handle pointing down) and left or right. It cannot be turned with the handle up. Both left and right positions keep the valve in a “not off” state but is one “less off” than the other? Does what I’m asking make sense?
Also, I have no idea what the third pipe is for on the “water return to pool” group. Ones the returns (there are four return jets in the pool) and one is the water features (slide and waterfall) but the middle one was not labeled or if it was, it’s since faded away. All I know is when I turn the valve so that the middle one is “off” it seems to build up a ton of pressure because when I turn it back on it is like a huge release that causes the pipes to shake and it makes a noise (sorry I cannot describe it better than that - but it’s clearly a release of pressure). Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Those 4 are return lines right? Slide, water feature, return jets, and the ? mystery line. Perhaps it's a pressure return for a pressure cleaner? Do you see any other ports or covers around the pool walls or something?

Maybe for the Polaris unless you have a separate pump for that?

S,

The pipe that has the ? is the input pipe to the valve... Water comes in on the ? pipe and either goes to the Waterfall or to the pool returns.. When you shut it off (which you should never do) you dead-head the pump.. And... you already know why that is a bad idea..

Thanks,

Jim R.

S,

I suggest that you run the Skimmer 100% open, just like it is in the pic, but I suggest that you close off the Main Drain valve so that it is only open 5 or 10%.. This will give you better skimming action. Main Drains are not really needed. Basically, just turn the handle of the Main Drain valve and point it to the 2 o'clock position in your pic... almost pointed right at the letter M..

Thanks,

Jim R.

That would make sense Jim. I didn't consider that because I didn't expect a supply line (leaving the filter) to come up from the ground. That seems odd to me.

There are four return jets in the pool walls, plus a slide, plus a waterfall. So I guess that means there must be 6 lines?

Makes sense and describes what I'm experiencing. Thanks!

Thanks! I was wondering if I could do that. I need better skimming action ;)

Steph, when you get a chance can you post a pic or two of the entire equipment pad so we can see everything? My curiosity is getting the best of me on how your plumbing is routed.
Can you see what you want from this pic (it's what I have on my phone at the moment)

Here you go, I also added a photo of the overall pool and the location of the returns/skimmers/water features.

Just to be sure - you mean like this (don't mind my crappy Photoshop skills, lol) 1630105531935.png

S,

That is a 2-way valve.. this means that you can shut it off at either end.. I asked that you point the handle the other way, but it makes no difference at all.. What you have will work just fine.

In your pic, I'd say the Main Drain is about 50% off... I'd rotate it more clockwise until is only slightly open..

Thanks,

Jim R.
