Pool Light Coming On Randomly After New Pump Installation

Leslies installed a Jacuzzi JVSI65S. It is programmed to come on at 10:00 PM. The pool light has come on randomly ever since. The pool installer claims he didn't do anything to cause this. My calls to Leslies to ask them about it weren't returned. I haven't figured out the exact pattern. I don't remember to check all the time. I don't think it is happening every time. It was on the last two nights when I went to bed, sometime after midnight. The electric controller I have for the light didn't work to turn it off. (I just tested it and it works now.) The first of these two nights it turned off about an hour later. I didn't note when it turned off last night but it was off in the morning.

Any ideas as to what is causing this and how to fix it? I have a handyman coming tomorrow.

Welcome to TFP.

Details are needed.

What model pool light do you have connected to what model light controller?

Do you have an automation system?

Thanks for your response. I have no idea what model pool light I have but I can show you a picture of the controller. The pool (and light) were here when we moved in so is over 20 years old. The light changes colors randomly. As far as I know there are no switches to control it other than this controller that I plug into an outlet.

I don't know what you mean about an automation system.

Does the light turn on and off at random?

Or change colors at random?

How many colors does the light have?

Describe how the light control worked when it worked properly?

That is an X-10 controller that is old and obsolete technology. A basic system consists of a transmitter and receiver which communicate through your power line. The controller is your transmitter. Someplace there is the receiver that actually turns the light on and off.

The flaw in the X-10 technology is that any other device in the house can put interference on your power lines that disrupts the X-10 communication with the receivers. That always made X-10 home automation unreliable.

Some VS pumps generate interference on the powerline. This is usually not a problem except in your case I think your new VS pump is interfering with your X-10 light controller.

There are more modern methods of doing remote light controls with digital communication. But first you or your handyman needs to figure out how your pool light is connected and where the X-10 receiver is.

Thank you! This makes sense. There is nothing labeled for the light anywhere with the rest of the pool equipment. There are four breakers in the breaker box but none are labeled. I'm hoping one of them is dedicated to the light because that would make it easy.

I realize it is old technology. Like I said, the pool was here when we moved in. We never used the light except once or twice when we first moved in. The controller has sat in a drawer for years.

I don't know how many colors the light has. I believe it normally switched through the spectrum in a pattern. When I used the controller, it was just to turn it on or off.

What do you think the receiver would look like? There is something in the box that houses the now obsolete mechanical pool timer (with the pegs) that might be it. I'll take a picture of it tomorrow. Would a new digital type communicator connect in the same place?

Look at the boxes in this link...

Thanks. I called the people at X10 but all their technical support is gone until next week. I'm going to call them next week. There are different frequencies it could be set to so possibly one of the frequencies will work without interference. I think it will probably be trial and error since we have no idea which frequencies the VS pump uses.

Just came across this thread and have the same problem after a Pentair Intelliflow variable speed pump was installed. Did changing frequencies solve the problem? If yes, what frequency did you switch the x10 to that worked?
