DIY Bluestone Coping and Paver Patio Progress Thread.

For anyone wondering- I am using a hybrid permeable base for the pavers. A geo grid rigid underlayment, then several inches of 3/4 clean angular gravel, then an inch of 3/8 clean gravel, then pavers and poly sand. I’m doing a 1/4” inch per foot back slope from the pool. I will use a fiber mesh cement edge restraint.

These are Blu 60 slate HD2 in shale grey - if you did nickel I suspect you had Blu 60 smooth? That is what I ordered but there was a mix up and they are textured. Considering they can’t get smooth I am sticking with the slate texture. A slightly different look than I was going for but it should look nice.
I did do the smooth but I am sure the slate shale grey will look amazing once it is in place

Unfortunately I think I underestimated my crushed stone need. I had 9 cu yards of 3/4 and 2 cu yards 3/8 delivered. I might need another yard of 3/8 which is gonna cost me an arm and a leg in delivery fee.

Despite the wrong order, those did turn out nice! Sucks about the crushed stone, I know that feeling of accomplishment as you see the progress of your sweat and tears, only to be followed by defeat. But, a small setback, and back to finishing that beautiful setup.

Thanks! Yeah my wife really likes the way it is coming out so all is good - I like the modern look of the smooth stones - but this look is very nice and the textured stones are a little more forgiving on getting the installation perfect.

i don't have a way to transport it myself without renting a truck and i asked for it to be bagged so they can get it into my back yard - if they do dump delivery it will be in my driveway.

also - as it turns out I paid for "decorative" stone as they have cheaper crushed clean stone - the guy on the phone was kinda snarky when he was figuring out my order, but i was like "this is a re-order and the first order i followed the advice of your co-worker who said this is what i want" - oh well i probably paid $20 extra a cu yard. But since I am saving probably $10K on installation that doesn't sting too much.

I’m cheap, for 1 cubic yard I’d be carting that from the driveway to the pool. 😂

I feel you - also i realize I didn’t clarify that the above extra cost is for 3 cubic yards- i had 11 cu yards delivered originally and i have moved all of it by hand - but i needed the bags because I couldn’t deal with that much material in my driveway- the bags are nice because i can rip them and use gravity to assist me in getting a bunch of it into my wheel barrow - the bags didn’t cost me much more. The sales guy convinced me when he said “you realize this is thousands and thousands of pounds of material??”

Techo has pretty good consistency in size but I'd recommend some control lines if your gonna run around the whole pool. A long string line over the pool amd another in the near field in pic then up the short sides. You'd be amazed how a slight deviation makes it so you dont meet up perfectly or squarely for that matter. Looking good so far. If you were near me I'd lend you the mini bobcat for a day you'd be done already with the base

You know they are doing extensive work across the street and they have a bobcat and mini ex just sitting there mocking me. Ill set some lines on your advice

How long can these sit without edge restraint? Should i add as i go or can i wait til its all done? I am gonna use fiber mesh concrete

Ladders dont need to be as big. 1x10 frame of 15x30 ish is what I do, handrails a little longer but offset with 2/3rds out behind rail. As for edge restraint if you plan on grass against the pavers use plastic spiked edging. I don't use concrete anymore it never lasts long term, the better plastic edging and spikes are the way I do them. Never tried fibermesh for restraint edge, probably would hold up if beefy enough
